DanD:

I've got to rebuild cnames,a,mx with some domains being really complicated in setup (note to self to keep a hard copy of dns settings for future) which may take waaay more time. Conundrum.

You might be able to find the DNS records you need on Securitytrails.com

Today is a sad day for NZ Hosting. We've had a large number of customers affected reach out to us for support and we're doing our best to help those we can but our options are limited at this time.

While we don't yet know what has happened here, one thing is clear: No-one wins with these outages and for those affected it must be a miserable Friday indeed.

There isn't a lot about this online, but Discount Domains was one of the brands acquired back in 2020 by Crazy Domains. I blogged about it at the time here: https://sitehost.nz/blog/2020/opinion-hosting-is-becoming-a-global-game-in-a-time-of-support-local and then published a follow-up on our blog shortly after: https://sitehost.nz/blog/2021/another-hosting-company-goes-crazy

If you are affected or know someone who is, it might be worth a read.

It looks like we're seeing some rays of hope.

Most of our DNS appear up and running.

In addition to this, the customer portal is back online

I did just make the account so I could post my reply (hence the fresh creation time) but it's a keeper not a throwaway :P

My second choice was UnholyDonut but ItsAlwaysDNS seemed more appropriate this time around 🤣

TBCH I'd forgotten I had a GZ account til I tried to (re)register and got told to reset my password instead...

Just to add insult to injury, here's the "most recent" blog entry ((they haven't posted in a while otherwise)

Too good to be true!! 🤣

I sure hope everyone runs as far away as possible from all Dreamscape companies after this. This is what? Their second major DNS outage in 2 weeks. And of course, their barely working panels don't allow customers to get UDAIs either, even when stuff is working properly.

There's nothing that company could ever do to convince me to use their services.

Don't be a dick.

Plenty of premium providers have outages all the time. Outages happen. Since you know nothing about the situation, I'd recommend keeping your assumptions to yourself.

And in general they aren't actually cheap. Just moving my first client now - He's agreed to just hand it over for me to manage at Metaname.  I actually don't like clients thinking I'm just trying to get them locked in and obligated to me but if a Domain I have is expiring it just renews on my VISA. I've had two people tell me after I'd paid they didn't want it any more and I just wear that on behalf of the other 37 clients happy to pay. I'd rather sleep at night.

Let's wait and see what the RCA says.

An outage this significant will doubtless require some kind of statement, ideally with cause and remediation/prevention details

A DNS provider that has set the DNS servers up right (and on seperate networks) should never have a complete outage.

When DNS goes down like this, you have not set it up right.

And setting it up right is not rocket science...

Another service is https://dnsdumpster.com which works really well.
