I wonder what most IT depeartments have as a plan B if MS services (or other online services) went down for weeks or months?
Plan? PLAN? We don't need no STINKIN Plan.

I think if MS services went down for that long there is probably things going on in the world such that we won't care that much about MS services.

We're in the process of moving our on-site document library to MS-hosted SharePoint. I asked what sort of backup process we're going to have.
"We don't need backups, it's in the cloud."

I know I'm going to be hit with a flurry of error reports as soon as it all comes right...
And I was right! It took me about two hours to restore a semblance of normalcy in a system that... I'll be charitable: is ill-equipped to handle this kind of failure.

Hey, why not just send an email update to let the whole org know what's happening...oh wait...sorry, I mean just send everyone a txt, there's a list of phone numbers....in SharePoint...
In all seriousness our business is going to look at an alternative "out-of-band" messaging solution. Just remember, don't use Azure AD to sign into the portal for this solution.

We have ManageEngine and an alert went out through that. The thing I had to hand-hold was public-facing, so sending an alert to all the customers is probably a bit overkill :)
Actually, due to the way it's all architected, customers wouldn't have experienced an outage per se. They could still submit requests and they'd still get the results emailed... but hours later than usual.

A bit late to the conversation but
I've been using MS365, Teams, Outlook etc and a few other sites that I use with "Log in with Microsoft" since about 7am this morning and not had a problem.
My exit to the internet is Spark in Dunedin. I’m actually hot spotted to my phone( OneNZ) PC has a VPN connection to an office in Dunedin that is connected to Spark. All traffic goes via VPN to the office.
Yep, that's because Spark don't peer on AKL-IX. They should, but that's besides the point..

it's in the cloud... It's on someone elses computer
The cloud will never die... Radio will never die, TV will never die
I seem to remember some data center in Oz that went out of business years ago and customers could not get their data back as the receivers basically said the data on the servers was part of the debt to be worked through. Not too sure how it all ended.

About the same Plan B that was(n't) in place for a pandemic requiring everyone to work from home...

You can see it that way, but you don't have to. Involuntary "IT manager jokes" have been better in the past. 😄
