Thank you Jesus for this thread.  It was the light I needed during these trying times.

Thought I’d give people a laugh for the weekend. Even busted out the old DVD player for the weekend as no tv

Had Enable fibre installed 10 years ago at this location and only had one single 1-2 hour outage back in 2018. The previously intact unbundled Chorus copper connection provided backup coming from the opposite end of the street to the fibre. Came to an end sometime in 2019 with withdrawal of copper unbundling 😢

We had one outage shortly after fibre was installed when a street flooded and the splice trays in a pit weren't waterproof enough. They fixed that and it's been bulletproof for the last decade even through later floods.

You'll never get a service provider to guarantee that their service is 100% reliable and will never fail with no need for backups. Just look at the prevalence of backup generators and UPSs, emergency water storage, sprinkler water storage, and the like.

There are ways to add multiple paths to GPON with use of multiple OLTs and reverse optical splitters, rings, or just multiple ONTs, but it all adds cost and doesn't hugely aid reliability unless you go and fully segregate the cable paths. It's still only something you'd see on business plans.

It’s day 5 now , would hate to see how long it takes to fix in an actual event . The workers have only just started digging up the whole subdivision for pipe replacement. I don’t think this is the last event. On a positive side 2degrees gave me 50 gb I brought a 2degrees sim. Normal day that amount wouldn’t last half a day

Sounds like a classic case of the developer not doing their job and the LFC not catching it.

I've seen a fenceline get dug up because the street power lines got buried under people's front lawn rather than road reserve.

I'm slightly surprised that they aren't keeping things operational during the works but that's likely the developer's choice if the network was handed back over to them.

if not yet fixed, this would be day 6 or 7 without an internet connection for you. have you kicked up starlink yet?

you've obviously had terrible luck with your fibre connection, however i'd hazard a guess you won't be needing it for years after this outage event.

I need greybeard for my fibre, it  was out again today , expected time to fix tomorrow afternoon ,  but lucky they managed to get it back late this afternoon. 2degrees  gave me another 50gb of data on my phone so I could at least  finish work this afternoon.

Talked to the contractors today , they are replacing the main gas pipes with thicker pipes as the old ones you can smell gas leaks. The fibre cables are not where they are on the plans and they are finding that they are only buried three hundred deep instead of 800 deep  . Tough on the contractors

Sounds like whoever was doing the services seriously cheaped out. Hope they're footing the bill.

Did someone run straight PEX instead of PEX/AL/PEX? I don't really understand how you can run 'too thin' gas pipe.

When gas went in the pipes were only 5mm over time people have complained about gas leaks so they have dug them up down the Main Street and installed 10mm. I think it’s powerco that owns them here , the contractors are digging off the plans but they say fibres not where it’s supposed to be so literally hit and miss

Wow! I totally understand your frustration.

Looks like the whole situation has been a string of gigantic stuff ups.

Fingers crossed for you.

On the positive side - one would hope once they have worked through this, it *should* be sorted. But it sounds like they are having to do quite a bit of work.
