And Vodafone (2100MHz)

Good results from both, using a Qualcomm chipset based device.

Both were "first try" tests by the way.

Location??

Is this on HSPA+ for either of these tests?

Yes the 9mbps down would of been done on a HSPA+ device

I have seen speeds of 18 mbps down on the Vodafone NZ HSPA+ network

The next 12 months mobile Broadband is going to move ahead at a great rate

Hmm, i'm in the CBD and this is a typical speed test, I was in Tauranga the other day and noticed the difference there speedtest was about 2.7mbps down.

Perhaps a little more TLC required?

Using a fixed line speedtest is not the best

Download a file over 9meg and then get the average speed for that download

So just for fun downloaded IE8 - 16mb, so I work this out to be under 1mbps.

Sorry John I beg to differ, my understanding was that you were improving HSPA speed around the country however I have not noticed any real change.

I have plugged in my iphone (only a 3.6 device and no HSUPA) on XT to my laptop and have done the same tests as above they are over 3 times faster than vodafone - my question is really are we going to see any decent speeds here on vodafone or are the results above as good as it gets?

Speedtests are nothing but a guide. I've been doing a lot of testing over the last few days around Wellington comparing VF and XT data cards. I've had sites where I've managed close to 6Mbps on XT and a few minutes later had speeds of around 1.5Mbps. My testing has gone well beyond using site such as speedtest.net as it's simply not reliable for mobile data.

WCDMA has a fixed capacity per site, you could easily have a 7.2 HSDPA fibre fed site and get a 2Mbps speedtest if there are other people using data on the network. When you're doing those tests there are large numbers of variables that are beyond your control. The Vodafone 3G network is under *significantly* greater load than XT simply because it has significantly more users.

A real comparison needs to involve some real world tests. What are DNS lookup times like? What are pageload times like? Is there packet loss occuring? The reality is most people who are using mobile data are using it for web browsing, both networks do that well.

The only disappointment with this card is quite poor signal strength. You need to be in good coverage to use it.

I agree, something similar to the Telecom Wholesale ADSL2+ google maps mashup for Vodafone coverage would be great, it would also help to work out where cell sites are and coverage problems.

AT&T released a cool iPhone app which lets you 'flag' bad coverage spots so AT&T can see them all on a map and work on the worst affected coverage areas. It would be cool if Vodafone (and Telecom) had something like this as well - currently (or when I was on VF) they told me to just keep calling in and logging blackspots.

Look I agreee, but once again the question I asked was if Rotorua was getting a speed upgrade on Vodafone the response was the Rotorua had already had some attention but I have had no performance improvement in Vodafone and believe me I would love to.

At the moment web browsing on vodafone is 'acceptable' speed however some pictures sometimes only partially display and streaming is constantly buffering.

John above said speedtest wasn't a good way to measure 3G performance and suggested I download a file 9mb+ which I did, the speed is obviously satisfactory to those at VF but to me it seems i'm paying a lot for an inferior service with no hope of improvement.

I don't sit there all day on speedtest but my 'real world' experience of this service is that it's not offering me the same experience as even my EVDO rev A data stick was.

We hear you and it does sound like there must be an issue as you should have experienced a good improvement. Sometimes an oversight over a single small detail during an upgrade can mean it doesn't deliver. Agree that Speedtest is poor for measuring mobile data speed, but if you've noticed no improvement during normal browsing sessions then we have a problem.

I'll tell the team that we have information from a very good source that the upgrade in Rotorua hasn't worked and get them to look into it further.
