timbosan: BTW, when I lived in Remuera we had the Telecom Fibre/Coxial network installed on our street, and into our house (giving us cable TV for about 3 months) before they pulled the plug. Anyone know what is happening with this network? All that bandwidth would far surpass ADSL technologies. I heard there was a cable TV station in east Auckland, but that's all?

This one keeps popping up regularly... that was Telecom's First Media HFC network, which they ditched in favour of DSL. From what little I know, the Wellington overhead cables were removed, but the Auckland underground ones may still be there - not so sure about the access points though.

The chances of Telecom selling the First Media remnants to a competior are exactly zero.

Lower Hutt still has all its underground cables burried. Still have all the annoying green boxes on the footpath as well.

On the JSG test all day i have not got lower than 3350 with an average of 3450. Run the test about 20 times

At the other end of the scale (TelstraClear Highspeed2 Minimum, theoretical new max 2M/128) max in 10 tests was 430/130, min was 230/130.

Anyway it's not how big it is, it's what you do with it that counts

Done on my IBM laptop on the telecom LAN at hereford street in auckland.

I didnt beleive it but ran it a few times and it was true but when you do an overseas test it drops down to 18000kbs ish....

Not too bad though.

That's why I have low speed, because Telecom keep it for itself.. :)

BTW, after measuring 98Kbps upload and 500(!)Kbps download speed yesterday afternoon, I sent a mail to Xtra.

They came back today morning that they are investigating my case and in the afternoon I got the reply that they reseted my DSL connection remotely.

I measured it now: 490Kbps upload and 1560Kbps download so I am pretty satisfied. That's more then enough for me at the moment.

Thank you Xtra, one more happy customer! :)

i don't know much about how data is transferred, but seems like the rate accelerates rather than being steady.
is this an effect of woosh 'turbo' or just how it happens over wireless?

also wondering whether i've bought into a network that won't ever be able to offer transfer rates much higher than
500kpbs due to physical limitations (mite be in wrong forum for this one:)

If it's a Woosh question, yeah, wrong forum. :)

Have a look www.ipwireless.com for the gear specifications. The current "cigarette pack" modem can apparently do up to 3Mbit/s downloads and IP Wireless reckons the technology itself supports up to 16Mbit/s. Whether or not that is theoretical maxima unobtainable in real-world situations I don't know.

What’s the point of having higher connection speeds when the actual performance is worse than the old plan? This week at times my 2mb connection has performed worse than my 256k plan of 2 years ago. My provider says the (Telecom) exchange is swamped. Bloody slack to give faster access without the infrastructure to handle the extra traffic! Andrew

Upload Speed: 500 kbps (62.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Lovely. Unfortunately only after midnight at 1 o'clock. The DL speed reduces to 800-900 kbps during peak time.

I just ran the test its 2:30Am and i got:

Download: 284Kbps
Upload:      39Kbps

I had bt going

Thats on a 2Mbps/128Kbps Ihug plan

I live in palmerston north.

Closed everything using the net and tryed again

Download:   1571 kbps (196.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload:      132 kbps (16.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
