adamj: Anyway, it's going ahead so I guess we will see what happens in due course

But is it? Well that’s if what TG has to say below means anything;

"This isn't being driven by the regulator. This is pretty much a manufactured grievance. You know that's the case because the only people marching in the streets about it are our competitors, not customers."

Gattung also said that contrary to what the media was reporting, the unbundling of Telecom's local loop was far from a done deal. She also doubted the Government would take any serious action against Telecom.

"The Government is way too smart to do anything dumb here."

I hope for the sake of free business, Telecom, New Zealand and anyone with a remote understanding of economics and the effects it will have on New Zealand, this is true.

The fact of the matter is, nobody gives a ^#*@ about free business, and this can be seen by Dr Brash's recent action where he publicly declared he *will* support LLU if it really does increase broadband uptake in NZ. And Dr Brash is certainly more qualified that YOU are in Economics, after all, he's a PhD scholar in Economics. So the point stands, nobody gives a &@#* about free business or if Telecom dies a miserable death when broadband uptake in NZ is increased. The Telecom NZ issue is akin to Microsoft. Think about it.

Ok ok calm down, calm down. I do point out one key word of Dr. Brash "IF"

Now you think about it, because people do give a "^#*@" about free business.

Yeah without a doubt - calm down.

People absolutely give a damn about free business, go out in the street and run a quick survey and then let us know the results - go on, do it.

As for not caring about Telecom dying a miserable death, if a company that makes up more than 20% of our share market were to go down in flames (not that there is a chance in hell of this happening) i think you would be singing a different tune.

The IF was referring to whether or not LLU would actually increase broadband uptake, because as you can read from the article on http://www.national.org.nz/Article.aspx?ArticleID=6397 , he is doubtful of the benefits of LLU. But then again, when LLU delivers the benefit he will be fully supportive of it. So yeah, the IF was referring to his doubts of LLU rather than whether or not he would support LLU once LLU had served its purpose. Dr Brash places broadband uptake ahead of free business, that's for sure. Broadband uptake is of paramount importance to NZ.

Sorry for the "tone" in the last message, wasn't aimed at you. Telecom was pissing me off by refusing to close a completed order, therefore blocking any further order request, like my transfer of ADSL to another provider!!!!

That’s more like it, yes that’s exactly what I was meaning with the word "If"

I'm not sure if Dr. Brash does put broadband ahead of free business. As I understand it free business is the very thing National stands for?

In regard to Telecom blocking request, they do not do this just to have a go at you, Service Orders take time to process, and due to the provisioning system Telecom use only one service order can be run at a time on a line. I do hope you give Telecom a chance to finish this request for you via Telecoms automated provisioning system, before you make up your mind about transferring your broadband to another provider.

I wasn't complaining about my broadband. I was just transferring my SkyTV bill to my Telecom bill, that's all. And it's taken more then 2 weeks now. I wanted to transfer from the el cheapo Quicksilver to ihug, and that's been inhibited by the open order.

I do realise free business an important part of National, but I guess under this extreme circumstance, Dr Brash must have felt that LLU was more important than free business. Or maybe one of this research thesis showed that broadband uptake could in someway affect the economy? I don't know. Just my speculation. So yeah, from that article it does appear he put LLU ahead of "taking Telecom's private property". But then again, he might change his mind over the next 36 hours, like he always does.

May I also add, if you read David Farrar's blog (http://www.kiwiblog.co.nz/), you'll find that he said "most anti-regulation advocates in NZ (NBR, Gareth Morgan, Fran O'Sullivan, myself, many top businessmen) got persuaded that regulation wasn't only defensible but very necessary."

Okay, this will be my last post in this thread.

bonkiebonks: Have you been asleep or what?

Only about 8 or so hours per night...  Thanks for caring :)

All ISPs provide ADSL access to their customers via Telecom's Unbundled Bitstream Service.

Yes.  Ok, clash of terms here...  I sent Juha a quick email and he helped sort out the confusion...

AU have been using a 'UBS' service for years now.  Basicly UBS seems to be nothing more than reselling the Telecom service in a range of configurations.

What the government just commited us to is UBLL - this did nothing productive in the AU market for domestic users.

What did impact the AU market is LSS (Which I think of as UBS - UnBundled Spectrum) - Line Specturm Sharing.

See: http://whirlpool.net.au/article.cfm/1280 to understand more about LSS in the AU market.

This afternoon I diagramed the difference between ULL and SLL.

See: http://www.tcn.bowenvale.co.nz/images/stories/ULLUBS.swf

Points of note:

1.  Providers delivering service on ULL will have to deliver phone and data.
2.  With SLL one provider can deliver phone while another delivers the data.
3.  What is good with a node network and UBL and SLL is that providers can bunny hop nodes together with copper rather than needing fibre.
4.  The SLL means delivery of more competitors in the market.  It's what worked in AU.

Cheers Don

That I am sorry to hear (re taking two weeks for your sky bill to be integrated), if you could PM me with some details, I may be able to pass this on the people who can help prevent this for other Telecom customers. Information I would like is, how you went about the provisioning request, i.e. via 123 etc, as two weeks seems like a long time!

And no need for this to be your last post! I hope I am not chasing you away!! Lol =P
