NZtimbo: So yes time for an update.

As most of you know things haven't been good for me during 2014.  But time heals all, even divorce.  Moving out of our beloved Family Home was a massive kick in the guts.

While I have a higher sync rate here in "The Renter" (~8.1mbps with no hard wired filter) the Chorus BUBA ATM backhaul continues to suffer even more congestion, we are now at ~0.5mbps every evening all evening meaning the modern interwebz is barely usable by just one person.

This weekend me and my daughter move out of "The Renter" into a new (er 1948) house to call our own.  Somewhat regrettably it's not in Outram as its become clear houses are more desirable here and therefore more expensive for what they are and I don't want to rent.  We're moving to Mosgiel and most importantly I have Chorus coming on Monday to install fibre so we'll be able to enjoy roughly 200x what we currently endure for the same price.

Where does this leave my Petition and all 39 pages and some 584 comments.  With Outram in the greater Dunedin boundary there are contestable funds from Chorus as part of the gigatown initiative and the National Govt available when finally announced (or was it just a election promise).  I will call for voluntaries from the community to take the reigns and guide them with information I've gathered and ideas that have been pitched.  Hopefully we can get to a point, just like me with fibre in Mosgiel, there is no upgrade costs to families, a fund with the Outram Charitable Trust may be a great way forward.

I do not believe the community should manage a solution as just like me when the manager moves out what happens.  I still do not accept Outram, Kirwee or any other township should be left in a black spot suffering severely congested backhaul provided by a utility service provider that is hiding behind a seven year old clause they believe gives right to 32kbps broadband as acceptable with today's modern Internet.  The Commerce Commission have again failed, putting a higher price on copper will not lead to a better service, all that will allow is higher returns to shareholders and continuation of a substandard utility.  I cannot understand why when Outram was ranked as outside the UFB and RBI (DSL) upgrade areas cabinets under the same Wireless RBI area were upgraded instead of having those funds used elsewhere.

So while I drink my cup of tea I'll leave you with this to have a giggle over...

Maybe the RBI wireless it the better option - I doubt you'll see massive dollars injected into the area other than having to accept that wireless is the only economical way of delivering high speed internet to living in rural areas. End of the day though part of choosing to live in a rural area means giving up some of the luxuries one is afforded when living in a major centre - the question is whether you're willing to give up those luxuries for the desire to live in a rural area.

Well now you are just a hop away from the fastest broadband in NZ. I suggest you move there.

I am currently looking at houses to buy and won't buy in a place with anything but VDSL or UFB. This is really what this thread comes down to.

Exact thing I did before moving into my place; closeness to bus stop, train station and checked out what internet services I have available: VDSL, Vodafone Cable and UFB when it comes on line in around January/February. Honestly, I'm always surprised that people never investigate into what services they can get in the area they're moving to - it's like moving to an area then after purchasing a house only to complain there isn't a school near by.

When i was with the ex and we were looking at a place to move to, This drove her up the wall to say the least.

My requirements were simple for internet.

Coverage of atlest VDSL.

There were a few more factors that came into it, but in terms of connectivity this was one of the biggest concerns to consider before ild even look at a place.

Mosgiel is inside #gigatownDUN so might give it a go but going from ~0.5mbps to 100mbps (200x faster) and no congestion should suffice for a while.

Not costing anything for install thanks to tax payers like me.

Problem with the service here and other areas like Kirwee is it used to be fine, we never suffered from congestion, we got full line speed (~8.1mbps) all the time.  So taking into account dial up was the mode of interwebz when we built here and then having ADSL1 as fast as it can come but ending up with ~0.5mbps due to congestion and hearing comments about oh I take the Internet service into account when looking really is nonsense.

Other corporate commentators here have said any xDSL service is not where future investments will be, so limiting your options to include VDSL you'll feel our pain in a number of years.  With the ComCom submissions about Boost HD and Boost VDSL it became clear attempts were made to let the regulated service congest.

Posting the video again cause it's hilarious...

P.S. Can't let this thread die I'd love to see where the community ends up "going forward".

When I purchased, I did investigate the availability and quality, at that time it was quite acceptable. If it was the same today, I'd have nothing to complain about. The fact of the matter is the service has been degrading steadily for quite some time.

When Tim said that 0.5Mb is the evening standard now, he wasn't lying. Those speeds can last until after 11pm.

Will I go wireless?
NO. I only know of one provider, and there is no way on this earth I'd use them again.

RBI wireless.
NO. Far far too expensive for my needs.

Increase in cost to fix the current ADSL
Yes. I'd happily pay $20 extra per month, and I think that's fair for both me and Chorus.

Congrats - you've got a solution.

I honestly think this thread should die - it has not gotten anywhere since your original post and you've got options but not wanting to use them due to costs. I was tempted to trawl back through the ~40 pages and post links to the part of the stuck record this particular post refers to.

Also to that Fair Go video? They've got options too, it is called Wireless RBI and it works well but the problem is everyone expects everything to be free or cheap now and doesn't understand the investment in infrastructure that was done by Vodafone to bring this to you.

Anyway, I vote we stop playing this stuck record and move on.

NZtimbo: The Commerce Commission have again failed, putting a higher price on copper will not lead to a better service, all that will allow is higher returns to shareholders and continuation of a substandard utility.

This is simply not true IMHO.  Everyone lost out with the Comm-comm's original decision, shareholders (no pay-outs) and customers (no more infrastructure upgrades other then UFB/RBI).  With the Comm-comm admitting they got this wrong due to NZ's unique Rural coverage, we can start-up these  everyone can get back close to where we were over a year ago.  Also the contestable fund applications will start early next year for the next stage of RBI.  In the end this Legacy infrastructure needs to be upgraded in the next several years, they were not meant to last forever.

As you say the issue does appear to be Backhaul, either BUBA Congestion or lack of Backhaul from the RSP's.  As per my PM, someone needs to log a case through their RSP to Chorus as "Slow Throughput" and I will get someone to look into it.  Without a case I cannot really do any more.

Although I have now moved off DSL...

I would be happy paying a little bit more than the initial price set by the com com, if it meant it was going towards long term upgrades for the benefit of all NZers.

However I think the point is, that many of us do not trust Chorus (based on previous experiences with Telecom) that the money WILL go towards the upgrades.
I don’t mind that Chorus shareholders get a little money, but it should not be at the cost of NZ progressing with telecommunications.

Historically, the government has had to threaten Telecom etc to get progress to occur, so all the $$$ isn't spent on shareholders.

(And before anyone says that Chorus / Spark are new companies - its the same old boys management club).

Personally I would prefer that X number of cents / dollars out of the line rentals (copper / fiber) go into a long term investment fund, that will go towards funding the next stage of upgrades (whether that be more fiber / wireless towers or newer GPON / wireless standards).

This would be a mandatory requirement for anyone operating a wholesale land line network (such as the LFCs).
