Tonga has the same Starlink coverage as New Zealand, its a global system limited only local approvals to operate and currently local ground stations.  Its does have limitations at higher latitudes but this is being addressed by new orbits (near polar I believe) primarily to serve Alaska initially.

When a full constellation of laser equipped satellites are deployed, it should be possible to reach the likes of Scott Base and even the South Pole station from NZ.  Quite a few intermediate satellites required so will be interesting to see how difficult that will be to coordinate. The same applies to any remote Pacific Island so there is a potential revolution there.

Musk replied, as reported in The Guardian, Stuff and some other places, tweeting asking for someone from Tonga to clarify if they thought they could use help from Starlink, and then in another message adding

“This is a hard thing for us to do right now, as we don’t have enough satellites with laser links and there are already geo sats that serve the Tonga region. That is why I’m asking for clear confirmation.”

Seems not too bad to get 2x the performance, business/commercial/shared used for 5x the price. Compared to around 10x the price previously for just regular Starlink for business!

I wonder how companies like this compete/compare now that Starlink is up and running?

There is still room for them because Starlink has limited capacity..... At least for a while. Eventually, Starlink will have an effective monopoly because no one else can match them. But that's a few years away.

Naturally he's chalking it up as a personal win (despite multiples bringing it up)

FINTEL are in fiji for sat comms and hands off to Tonga. Presume they will do a form of backhaul and the dishes will allow groups to get online

Six months to set up a temporary SpaceX ground station ain't great. As Musk mentioned, there is already other satellite Internet providers available.

While we are off-subject.

Matangi Tonga Online ROV searches for Tonga's broken fibre optic cable - moved by tsunamis or shock waves

...Tonga's broken submarine telecommunications cable is not where it is supposed to be. A search last night by an ROV from the cable ship Reliance, could not locate the break, after it arrived in the area [Friday 4 Feb].

“They have a good idea of where the break is. However, their search last night, did not find the cable break. It appears that the shockwaves or tsunami waves pushed the cable away from where it is supposed to be,” the CEO of Tonga Cable Ltd., James Panuve, told Matangi Tonga this afternoon.

...He said that the Reliance had since moved closer to land to pick up the cable path from its Tongatapu end, and then follow it back out to the open sea to try and reach where the break is.

...There is also concern that there might be another eruption.

...The estimated time to fix International cable is one week.

“It can be longer, can be shorter. Really depends on extent of damage once they locate the cable break. For the domestic, they will allow another week to check it out.”

My initial thought was nah, we have too much redundancy, but after watching this video on undersea cable repair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3tPI0qbLaE&ab_channel=SubComChannel

NZ could easily be crippled by a coordinated attack on our sub marine cables, the cables are clearly charted so if someone wanted to run it for every body just drag a few anchors at the right spot to server the cables.

NZ would be stuffed, we have a few satellites to get data but we would be stuffed for weeks / months.

With the existing four cables ( east/west Southern cross, TGA and Hawaiki ) and the upcoming new Southern Cross cable no natural disaster could remove connectivity. An attack is a very different situation. Of course this does not mean whichever ISP you have chosen has bought appropriate redundant access for every situation.
