Yeah, there's talk of air-fibre in the community pages, am looking into that too.

Looks like you can't cheat and get it delivered to a different region, then install it elsewhere?

Have you taken a look at https://www.starlink.com/map ?  Depending on how close you are to the edge of your full cell, you could take a gamble.  You can return it for a refund within the first 30 days of receiving the dish.

Anecdotally, over at /r/starlink there are quite a few posts about Starlink working outside their registered cell.

Thanks, going to get a quote for the local WISP before gambling on an out-of-region starlink connection.

If you enter your address into here, what does it say you can get?

Only wireless or VDSL (which is what we have - 5.7 mbps down / 0.6 mbps up). Fibre stops next door.

Wireless might be a good option then, I'm sure you'll have a WISP nearby.

Re fibre, unfortunately the rollout has to stop somewhere, I would guess you're outside the footprint.

The Chorus site has a contact form now to get a price for self or neighborhood funded fibre extension. Next door does not sound too bad.

We're 500m from the road and we rent. Not stumping up for the fibre install costs. ;)

I've had my Starlink since the end of August last year. It's been very reliable overall and Speedtests between 100mbps and 300mbps with the usual speed being about 220mbps.

On a couple of occasions, big solar flares appear to have degraded the service for a few minutes or an hour or two. You still get connectivity, it's just intermittent. For streaming content you don't notice, but for real time activities it can have an effect. But this is pretty rare. There is also no data cap, so keep that in mind.

I'm very happy with it. It's actually a backup connection for our Spark fibre service. The fibre is faster, but it has had some reliability issues. In the last 12 months we have had 3 fibre outages that lasted at least 3 days each. These were due to various contractors digging up the cables and destroying them. In one case, it killed or mobile phone services on Spark, Vodafone and 2 Degrees because a fire affected a location they all share in Tauranga. That lasted 4 days.

Starlink bypasses the terrestrial infrastructure in our area, so it keeps working even everything else dies. We have solar and Tesla Powerwalls and the Starlink uses about 50w of power and maxes around 140w if very busy. This has reduced steadily as they remotely update the firmware of the dish and the router every week or so.

Can you get it installed to the roadsite and then do a point to point link back to the house?

How do you find the 100ms latency or so in practice for things like zoom calls?

I work from home 100%.  I spend 1-2 hours a day in teams/zoom calls.  No issues.  I use a VPN for work and it never drops during the day.  I use teams for calls to mobiles and land lines, again no issues.
Most people are surprised when I tell them I am calling via satellite.  Call quality is that good.

I use to have issues with mobile calls due to pooor cell coverage , but since I enable Wi-Fi calling on  my mobile (iPhone on Vodafone) I no longer have dropped calls.  Works great via the Starlink

Same here on Starlink

My wife spends most of her day on Teams or Zoom for work with other Kiwis and usually has the best quality video/audio
