pih: Anyone else just had a major outage? Northwest Auckland area.

Yeah, also down in the lower north island.
Appears to be a global outage!

In Henderson Valley - I've had more dropouts than usual over the last 10 days - though still better than a 14Mb/0.8Mb "VDSL" :)
I run constant monitoring of the link - would be happy to share the graphs going back to last Sep if they would be useful.
Latency is typically 55-65ms at best, but oftend drops to 100-200ms and then back to 55-65ms.

Speeds are often 200Mb, can peak higher, but also drop to 50Mb.  Upload is typically 25Mb but in the 5-35Mb range.

Very easy to setup.  Most difficult part of install is getting the cable inside the house.   Reuse your sky/freeview sat dish mount. A very non technical neighbor of mine did the install without assistance.

Ookla Speedtest generally shows about 220mbps down and 10-20 Mbps up. The speed test in the Starlink app gives a slower result. Usually around 120-150mbps.

There's is no data quota or slowing down after a certain amount.

Mine just sits on the lawn and the cable comes in through a window I opened, then closed.

Do you see rain fade effects in mild or heavy weather and if so what kind of mount do you have?

Been having intermitant connections on and off for last three months. Their support seems unable to fix. Been fantastic till this started. They only lasted 4 6 hours of issues but now have had three days of this.

Tracert shows a bad connection after the ground station and its not on the satelite link.

Music playing on Bose runs out of buffering and drops out then sometimes totally drops so easy to see when issue happens. Ping stops.

During these times any computer activity just stalls so nothing can be done on computer.

Our location uses a waikato groundstation. App on phone does not show these outages on the uptime network status but tracert shows them.

Their support has not respoinded to ticket on this latest round and often takes a few days to reply:(

Run the dish into a Fritzbox but issue still there if i use their wifi router.

Any ideas?

Could be a dish issue have you checked the alignments and all equipment if there’s joiners should be replaced

it is normal for some hops to not respond.  Not all routers are configured to respond to Icmp requests from public networks.
just because a hop doesn’t respond to an icmp request doesn’t mean your connection in down. As long as you get a response from the destination server it is ok.

I have wondered if wind can make the dish wobble. I've seen dishes mounted on the end of single poles that seem to provide an opportunity for oscillation unless *absolutely* rigid.... Which seems impossible for some of the mounts I've seen. As time passes and the mounts gain more play through wear. How much is too much?

I don't know.
