He's done that " I have tested it with long and short cable, difference is minimal and acceptable."

I agree that telephone extension cords aren't great but tgzerozone may have other problems.

Yup, went from 7600 to 5700 overnight doing nothing. Then went from 5700-5200 or so after getting rid of two unused jacks. Still go three more unused jacks that I haven't disconnected though, too scared it might go fro 5200-4200. hahaha.

Get a master filter installed! Oh Crap, you already got told that one aye...!!!!!!!

also do the get rid of the 10m phone extension cable! you are only creating problems for yourself and making it much harder for the people here to be able to help you, IDC if it makes no deference on your connection just dam well REMOVE it, once you have a Clean connection you will then actually be able to see how much it degrades your connection....

To get back on the extension lead. I had the router plugged into a point with a short extension lead, maybe 1-2 meters. The connection at that point was 7600 or so. I then plugged in the 10 meter cable to move the router to the other side of the room where all my toys are sitting because I wanted to connect them with CAT6 because wireless was not good for streaming netflix etc. The connection then dropped from 7600 to about 7500. So the 10 meter cable does not seem to be the problem. I will happily put the short one in for testing etc, but that does not seem to be the problem.

On master filter. My logic says if I disconnect all jacks but the one that the router is plugged into, the master filter won't make any difference. I could be wrong.

There seems to still be a phantom cable there that I am not sure of where it goes. I have a white and 2 greys into/out of my kitchen jack. There are two greys at the demarcation point and one grey in my upstairs jack that I use.

That is one grey to many. I mean, why would two cables come into one jack? So my logic says one cable comes in, and two goes out. I think the one white one goes up to my bedroom, meaning one of the greys must be going in, and the other one out. So if this one grey goes out, I would imagine either this grey, or the other one at the demarcation point goes upstairs to my router? Where does the other grey go? I do have one more point in the lounge, but could swear shining a flashlight in behind the wallunit that that one is white?

This sounds very confusing.

Tech is coming today, hopefully they phone me before hand so we can be acquainted.

Gooseybhai: As others have said to effectivly trace all these cables you need to put a tone on each pair. No point trying to go by the colour of the cable containing the pairs.... you might find there are interconnects in the celing etc i.e. already sounds like you have a rats nest wiring scheme therefore its likley the installers at the time (most likley a sparkey) used whatever cables they had in stock e.g. grey and white.

Agreed yes, that's why I stopped snipping cables off. :)

As you already have a Master Filter installed there should no need to be mucking with the phone cables, you should have a dedicated DSL jack, As you mentioned earlier you had Coffeebaron come out to install the filter so any mucking with those cables will only bugger things up.

I still say do away with the phone extension cable, it costs bugger all for a 10 meter length of cat5/6 that you can run around your room from the modem/router to your network switch

Chorus will take one look at that extension cable and tell you that's where all your troubles are and then charge you~$200 for the site visit.

What was your attenuation like before the Filter was installed?

CoffeeBaron has not done any cabling there yet no. I will take out the long cable when the tech comes. It was easier to hide one telephone cable than 3 cat 6 cables. I don't like cables all over the show, that is why I went for one. I'll plug the shorter one in and then if we get this fixed, will do a comparison with the long and short one.

I don't actually remember what the ATT was like before sorry.

Just found a whisper cabinet on the corner off alexander and deep creek road. Must be a new one as I don't see it on streetview. But according to their cabinet list, there is one there. That is much close to my house, maybe 1000 meter max.

OK, mapped every whisper cabinet in Torbay.

I found a single bay whisper cabinet 600 meters from my house. What is the difference between double bay and single bay. Would this be of any use. It's just down the road.

If you dont like cables, is your router able to / happy with ethernet hubs? i.e. your dsl modem would be located at the jackpoint with the supplied cable, you then connect one of the ethernet ports to a cat6 10m cable... run this to a ethernet hub and plug in your 3 devices there?

My question for others is "is the modem" smart enough to know/can be told it has a hub connected and as such the throughput across all devices would be as normal as individually using 3 eth ports?

Edit: With a Master Filter/Splitter and a dedicated jackpoint... you could almost move the jackpoint sucessfully.

Also, have you tried using those plug in filters and see what happens?

Filtering would only be necessary if the OP was reinstating the jacks he disconnected. If he's only got 1 what's to filter?

Just got back to work. No luck so far. Speed sitting at 7600 with the short cable.

I have to concede, something seemed to have happened to the long cable I put in, it was doing fine at 7 + and now it is on 5 +. When tested initially there was no issue with it, it seems to be an issue now. So still on 7600 though, re-checked all cables, disconnected all but one jack so no master splitter needed.

Figured out that one neighbour has 10+ mbps and that he is plugged into a different card at the exchange. Told tech to go patch me to that card, so will see if he manages it.

Will have to go the long CAT6 route and hub. My apologies for earlier saying it wasn't an issue, but when I just put it in, it honestly wasn't. Someone must've jumped on it.
