Yes, I still use the Constant Vigil / Sentry lite, it still works well. Batteries wear out over time, but are easy to replace with the original model.

They are made for the NZ market to power your ONT and a router only. If you've also got a 2degrees mobile with WiFi calling and a landline phone it'll keep it up and running for quite a while.

I use an APC UPS at home (there are quite a few models) which powers my server and all my networking equipment for around 30 minutes.

And yes - that photo showed my connection being stable. The outages are caused by myself and are all accounted for. I last experienced a true outage maybe 2 years ago with my previous ISP but am yet to experience an outage with 2degrees.

Few points to note.

You can retain copper for voice, and get UFB for internet if you want. Below is from chorus, but I assume the network companies in other areas are similar. It is aimed at machine to machine communication like alarms, but all the network company sees is a voice call.

When we install fibre at your place, usually the copper cabling is removed but you can request that it remains in place if you want to keep your existing alarm set up. But of course, with dual lines servicing your property comes two monthly plan charges.

While expensive, keeping both will give a redundant connection (Internet, and phone). You could even sign up to voice services on both copper and UFB so you would have internet and two phones...

Sounds like you have fringe coverage, enough to connect to the network, but not enough to do anything useful. (with the little antenna built into your phone).

It is possible to mount a larger external antenna on the roof, and get a usable signal, even though mobile phones can't get a useful connection.

Removing the included antenna from the phone below, and wiring up a directional antenna would likely yield stable voice service at low running costs. (just keep a prepay sim alive for emergencies / inbound calls).

The phone pictured even has its own built in battery backup...

There are also kits to get the boosted signal into your existing mobile via a cradle.

I was curious about the sync thing people were talking about on my modem with me turning it off when I wasn't using it. I left it on yesterday and last night did speed tests at 6.50pm. For curiousity sake I did turn it off last night and turned it back on this morning when I got up. I ran the same speed tests again, via the same site and the results were basically the same. The only difference was a .30 increase in the download speed last night. The upload speed was the same. ? But if it is better for the unit to actually leave it on, I will do that. :-)

DLM runs for 10 days, iirc. You have to leave it on and check after that. Not sure what you use for speed test, but your modem should provide dsl sync rate figures. Might be easier to monitor that.

I have been trying to find where to access this information? I've read various other posts and have seen what people are posting and what I should see if I can get to the DSL information page.... but despite my best efforts and googling etc I can not find the DSL information page? I run Windows 7. Thanks.

You need to log on to the web interface of your modem. I think the HG659 is http://192.168.1.1/

Then click through to find the ADSL information. The interesting figures will be sync rate, noise margin, attenuation, and possible the number of errors counted.

AHHHH no wonder I couldn't find it. Thank you RunningMan :-) Does it matter that my modem has the 'b' after it? It's a HG659b ? I'm leaving the modem on all the time now, but obviously I do turn my computer off.. and I turn it off at the wall too..... have tried numerous times now to connect to the link but it will not connect, it keeps saying it's timed out. :-(

Thanks John, I've found it by googling and am now logged into the modem but can't find where to get to the DSL information page that shows all those things like the noise levels etc.

Thanks Spyware but cost really is an issue for me, I have to keep my costs to the lowest I possibly can and for all I use the internet for, the speeds I have now are fine for me.
