Data usage for the month of december 2022. Customer Names redacted.

There is probably approx another ~250 that are IOT devices, water pump monitoring or milking sheds that use less than 1gb of data and didnt appear in the report.

Being rural, data usage is probably less than your typical urban user.

Interesting

49 users out of 1,677 (~3%) use > 1TB/month, and together they consume 75.6TB out of 427.1TB (~18%) of the data - this is the same as the bottom 798 users (~48%)

The average user consumes ~255GB data/month

The bottom 164 users (~10%) each consume <10GB/month, together consuming ~600GB

I've seen indications in this thread that some people think 'normal' use is an order of magnitude higher than I have exceptionally good reason to think it actually is.

While I think you probably have a valid point about GZ usage being above average, I wonder if the data you have access to is potentially biasing you in the opposite direction. Your data as far as I know comes from Spark, the ISP of choice for old people and the non tech savvy, who are fundamentally less likely to have as much data usage as the tech savvy or digital natives. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it actually has the lowest average usage of any ISP in the country because of the makeup of it's users.

Be thankful. From memory ADSL came in around 1999. Telecom had a 250MB plan, good for emails and occasional browsing. $49. I think the 400MB plan was $69 and the 600MB plan for us high users was $99. The 10Gb plan was $999. Thereabouts anyway.

I vaguely remember Telecom trialling ADSL in Wellington around that era.. it wasn't long after that we upgraded from dialup to cable with the the short lived and ill fated Chello which was speed rather than data capped. From memory then things sucked for a bit until Telecom's first unlimited offering which I think was under the Jetstream banner.

Yes that sounds right, if I recall it was launched under one name, then cancelled and returned a bit later with more restrictions (fair use?) under the other name.

When I moved to Wellington (Tawa) in 2001, I got ADSL as soon as I moved in. I had had dial-up in Whanganui before that

Anywhere from 2-5TB monthly but my uploads and downloads are pretty much the same, not sure why my uploads are so high as i dont use the cloud but i cant be bothered to find out. Streaming, gaming over 4 desktops , phones and 1 laptops.

Retired couple averaging 250 - 300GB monthly. To use more we'd have to do less.

I keep coming back to this post by vexxxboy, if our uploads were high I would have to know why. How many other multi TB users actually know what their connections are doing?
