How is it on the 2Mbit XTRA plan I got just that and now when they roll out the new better faster cheaper 3.5Mbit plan I can only get a 2.3Mbit's ??????

If Telecom / XTRA can deliver 2Mbits consistantly to me (I'm 300metres from Dslam) how is it when the 3.5Mbit plan comes out they can only give me 2.3Mbits ?

They say they dont guarantee anything !!!!!!! As a customer I enter into a deal with them in good faith and have to guarantee my monthly payment is on time and it works, what is it about all of those business practices you think we should let Telecom get away with team ?

You can try complaining to the Commerce Commission, but I predict you wouldn't get very far. Beyond what's set out in the Telecommunications Service Obligation there is no default service quality defined for residential data connections. Next, you could point to consumer and commerce laws and say you're not getting the service advertised as having 3.5Mbit/s speed but amazingly enough, Telecom has been allowed to contract itself and customers out of that legislation, which binds every other business in the country. Who else can offer "best-effort" service of an unspecified "internet grade" without any guarantees?

Hi Everybody

For people that are experiencing poor speeds, like the one in the very first post of this thread, I wonder if you've checked your hardware. The reason I say this is that I too am on a 3.5 down / 128 up plan and until recently was experiecing speeds at around 1.6 down / 128 up which I thought was awful. This was with a USB modem. However, I then tried it with an Ethernet router and was surprised to find my speed at 3.3 down / 128 up. I am over the moon with this, but wonder how many other people out there are being limited by USB equipment without realising it?

That's a good point - USB 1.1 modems are slow, and it depends on your computer's motherboard controller what kind of speed you'll get. (Cheap motherboard, crap USB performance I've found, even with the fast 2.0 standard devices.)

Yep its right to check the modems / routers its a good point however done all that and even had Telecom confirm mine is fine so its the crap service as far as I can see team !

Thanks for the tip, but I have a wireless router with 11Mbps speed capacity so it's not the hardware.

Another tip:
Write to Xtra and ask them to reset your ADSL connection remotely, it could help too.
In my case it's solved the problem.

I'm on Quicksilver's 3.5M/128k 30GB Student plan. Tested at 12:25hrs 25th April on NZDSL Speedtest with a 32Kbps streaming radio in background.
Download Speed: 2242 kbps (280.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 129 kbps (16.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Sadly this is not what I achieve on international sites. The following was tested on Speakeasy Speedtest on their San Francisco server.
Download Speed: 290 kbps (36.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 103 kbps (12.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

I read on other forums that the Quicksilver's international connections are overloaded, and hence my poor speed. :( Previously when I was with Orcon's 2M/128k plan, I could achieve a sustained speed of 1980 kbps and 125 kbps on both NZDSL and Speakeasy. Grr..

You can all stop crying now. I do believe i have just set a new record low!!

After consistantly getting 3.2Mbps+ this is my new speed as it has been since around 5pm tonight:

Download Speed: 99 kbps (12.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 67 kbps (8.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
