Batman:

what's the advantage of Starlink vs Spark Giga internet + Spark Mobile?

thanks

Starlink vs Fibre - always fibre unless there are major infrastructure issues. with current technology in NZ you really can't beet fibre for latency and cost.

The Starlink advantage is quite large if the fibre craps out about 1.5km shy of your gate. πŸ˜”

Ay, even 300 metres! The options for me were to pay essentially $1000/m(etre) or $159/m(onth). Easy choice when you put it like that.

SirHumphreyAppleby:

Seems odd they'd be promoting this service in parts of suburban Auckland with gigabit fibre access at around half the price.

It might be way easier to reach people scattered around the country without Internet access by advertising to their family and friends in the city who can let them know how they can finally get decent Internet, as well as reach people in the city who have baches. Obviously that ad is not meant for people who want to get Internet in the city.

Or in my case probably tens of kilometres from your gate!

Got this in the mail

Starlink should focus more on rural, urban folk with fibre access have no need

Have a bit more of a think about it…

Starlink offer RV service, lots of those folk still live in the main centres - so the RV Starlink service is perfect for them.

Also, loads of people in urban areas own beach houses around NZ - so the standard Starlink service is perfect for them, if they can afford it.

Hi, I just cleared my rural mailbox and discovered said flyer. Seems it may be a NZ wide push to fill up all of the slots. Maybe Elon needs a few more billion for his twitter purchase.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Starlink connection as it is the only viable option for me.

How are everyones speeds holding up? I keep seeing articles about Starlink speeds dropping as the network gets more congested.

Mines been rock solid, right now it is 245Mbps down, 26Mbps up (via Speedtest) and no noticable change from when I got it other than much improved latency. Speeds have always been in the 180-280Mbps down, 12-30Mbps up ranges.

Just tested mine: 181 down, 12 up. I'm also on a Teams call at the same time - dunno if this affects test results. This is faster than I used to get; I haven't tested speed for months though.

Thought speeds had dropped to about 10-15Mbps based on throughout graphs on Friday night while the family was watching something on Disney+ that kept buffering. Did a speed test and it hit 120Mbps iirc, tested a few other things and confirmed that it was just Disney 🀣

I rarely see over about 150 down at the moment, but usually over 100.
