I haven't seen comments here about this story:

Starlink adds a 1TB monthly soft cap for residential users • TechCrunch

SpaceX’s Starlink internet has included unlimited bandwidth since launch, and while the service will technically continue to provide that to customers, users who exceed 1TB of data use in a single month will now be throttled once they reach that threshold.

Starlink sent out an email to users across the U.S. and Canada on Friday outlining the new so-called “Fair Use” policy, which describes how residential users will start out each month with “Priority Access,” and then continue to receive coverage with “Basic Access” for the remainder of the monthly billing period if they cross that 1TB threshold.

Basic Access means that they’ll get “deprioritized” in terms of use, meaning they’ll get slower speeds than Priority Access customers when there’s heavy use on the network. Starlink also notes that data used between off-peak times, specifically between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., won’t be counted toward that 1TB monthly Priority bucket.

The company is also introducing data use monitoring via user account pages so people can track how close they are to the soft cap.

NZ is a very competitive broadband market, they skipped passing on the monthly increase to kiwis and i would guess we won't see soft caps either

I knew something like that would happen eventually. Elon must be clamping down on people downloading TB and TB per month.

So far in NZ speeds seem to be holding up OK, vs the US where they are seeing a lot of speeds hitting less than 100Mbps. We might be safe from data caps / throttling for now. I guess time will tell.

"Ya cannae change the laws of physics Jim"

Starlink's bandwidth per bird is fixed, more and more customers using more and more data will eventually saturate its capacity,

You can't quickly add capacity (additional satellite shells) so you have to ration it,

The next step it to unleash the power of economics by charging people more for what they used to get for less. (tiered pricing)

But Elon's a bit busy with blue ticks at the moment so that's probably still a while off,

My family member in rural Waikato (between Hamilton & Raglan) was getting over 250Mbps download the weekend before last.

Compared to the Spark Wireless they used to have they're deliriously happy 😀😀😀

CrazyM:

How are everyones speeds holding up? I keep seeing articles about Starlink speeds dropping as the network gets more congested.

Mines been rock solid, right now it is 245Mbps down, 26Mbps up (via Speedtest) and no noticable change from when I got it other than much improved latency. Speeds have always been in the 180-280Mbps down, 12-30Mbps up ranges.

Here's a couple of SamKnow graphs for my Starlink connection (the light purple lines are the domestic tests)

Time of day speeds for last 30 days:

Here's an indication of Starlink traffic per capita (based on the Starlink AS Cloudflare stats in September)

Interesting there have been no subscription price drops for the top 4 countries...

People using SamKnows on Starlink in NZ might cause a data cap to be set lol...

Yes, afaik for the consumer grade service it is. Looks like the business service is offering a static, publicly routable address, but consumer tier is largely CGNAT.

Hmm, looking at their FAQ it appears even on the business service you need to apply for a public ip.

Good time to get your friends and family signed up, Starlink is offering 50% off the base kit at the moment.

As pih mentions already - Starlink hardware 50% off to my surprise by email this morning.  Thought I'd upload the email imagery.

It seems from the Starlink map that they've managed to iron out most of their NZ black-spots, perhaps with laser links partly.  They seem to have got all of Australia covered now too - there was a large chunk of northern Australia 'missing' connection.

Nice to see the Chathams covered, but what are these other places:

Maybe they're supposed to be Auckland Is & Campbell Is, but in that case they're hundreds of kilometres out of position?
