I'm going to repeat myself,

1) Forget everything you know.
2) Click on [this link right here]
3) Copy and paste the following:

"I, Theunis Grobler need some help with my connection and would like to employ your help with getting everything sorted, from what I understand my home wiring is in a bit of a mess and I might have made things worse by messing around with it. In return for your work I'm willing to offer you an excellent coffee as well as give you $150, I will also post on my thread how this helped me out greatly and will refrain from attempting any more work on our line, thankyou"

As his name suggests however, if you're going to make an excellent coffee there are some rules to this to please CoffeeBaron:
1) Never use instant.
2) Fresh beans
3) If using espresso machine, make sure it's clean and up to standard, do no over-extract the coffee.
4) Scrap all the above, attend a Barista course and make him a Chemex using the best beans, and a pinch of Cocoa.

Thanks mate, but I don't see what much more coffeebarron can do. There is now one line coming in, with one jack directly connected to that one line. There is nothing more anyone can do to make the indoor wiring better. Impossible. The sync at the road is 7600, the sync in the house is 7600. You can put wires plated with gold in the house it would make no difference.

Don't be a smart-ass.

I thought VDSL had to have a master filter by default?

In the past it didn't have to, now it's a requirement for all new connections.

This is ADSL thought.

No worries, but when the sync in the road is the same as the sync in your house, you cannot better the sync in your house. It is not possible.

When did VDSL come into it?

All master filter suggestions aside when a connection is on ADSL 2 but maxing out at ADSL 1 speed maybe there's something else going on.

Is it possible to try a different modem?

No go, sync in road is 7600, sync in house is 7600 give or take. Another modem cannot make it sync quicker in the house than out in the road.

Reasons are that cabling is ancient and corroded, and card in exchange is not the quickest.

Solutions to get up to 10 mbps, and no more in that area:

1. Replace 4 km worth of cabling (Aint gonna happen)
2. Patch to faster card in exchange (trying this now)

The solution to this sounds rather simple.

The OP has provided line stats. Attenuation is 38dB yet the sync rate is only 5Mbps (give or take). However the line is in fact ADSL2+. Therefore the exchange card is an ISAM.
38dB is quite high attenuation but I don't think it would be out of the question to expect around 8-9Mbps -provided decent cabling. I am not basing this on anything scientific just simply my own experience with DSL rates.

The OP has tested the line at the road giving 7600Mpbs. While this does sound a lot like an ADSL1 sync rate (normally 7616) I don't believe that the exchange is to blame and the states clearly state it is negotiating with G.992.5.

The only thing left is the local loop. It will be sub standard wire probably with a multiples coming off it. Now because this is just a bog standard DSL connection the OP will find it very hard to get Chorus to investigate removing multiples and cleaning the line up. If this was a business connection with CIR etc then more joy would be had.

Yup, lines are in a sad state, some you touch and they just break off, amazing anyone still has internet there. I run a business from home, should maybe transfer the connection to the business and get them to make it decent, but that still will not be set in stone.

To get the cable swept for multiples you need to look at ordering a high quality business data circuit like HSNS. Chorus wont do this sort of work for a standard DSL connection as there is no guarantee on them but eith HSNS there is. Be prepared to pay for it though...

Might consider that. I've managed to squeeze 8400kbps out of the line now. It seems to be doing the job. NEtflix is streaming but not in HD as obviously international traffic is only sitting at 2000-3500, mostly 2000.

For now it is working without buffering. Thumbs up to the chorus tech, he did what he could with the infrastructure he was working with.

They will on a DSL fault. Makes their life easier. Someone needs to right up a diagram of how an old house is wired. And then another one as to how it should be wired.

This is got to be the most painful thread I have read.

Painful, yea.

Conclusion to wrap it up:

House wiring was not the issue, crap cabling and chorus copper infrastructure is to blame here. Nothing that can be done unless patched to wholesale cabinet with less cable.

International bandwidth seems a little better though lately as I now manage 1080 HD from netflix. That is all I wanted, to just have decent video streaming. Got it, so happy for now.
