What I don't get is on Whangaparaoa Peninsula they have bought all equipment/man power etc out and gone all the way to Gulf Harbour why would you not just finish the Peninsula as a whole? I guess this isn't the only place in a similar situation but just seems like a complete waste of time/resources to leave and come back

Yea we're in Shakespear Rd, so same story. But we are right on the limit from the cabinet for vdsl (1km exactly) so our speeds are average :(

Down in Terracotta Harbour, they will get it first because it's businesses and apartments with high density, therefore more $$$ per km of fibre.

UFB 200mbps by March 2015.

About 6 months ago, this was Jul-2015, changed to March about 5 months ago I think.
Got the letter from Chorus saying work was due to start November. All I have seen is some mauve spray paint - not even sure it is theirs.

Another big factor in deciding which areas to get UFB first - What areas have existing Chorus ducting installed. This would tend to be areas that have VDSL. Due to the cabinets having fibre backhaul. Also Albany would have been top of the list, due to most of Albany being relatively new houses / streets. This would mean small section sizes. Existing copper installed in ducting instead of direct buried. The new houses meaning almost all would have ducting from the street to the house, instead of direct buried leadin cables. And high incomes again due to the houses being relatively new. So yes Albany was a logical choice to be first for fibre.

Yes, that's disappointing. I know there may be some logistical considerations with the UFB roll out but I still don't think it's fair that some people are getting it ahead of others. How hard would it have been to give UFB access to everyone at the same time? With a bit of planning and effort I would have thought it manageable.

*sigh* I don't get UFB until September 2015.

Umm are you serious? It is a $3.5 billion project. Doing every where at the same time is literally impossible. There will be hundreds of thousands of hours of labour involved.

nah I wasn't serious but I'll quit with these sort of posts. I thought I was being clever and telegraphing the joke with "may be some logistical considerations" and "I don't think its fair that some people are getting it ahead of others" and "how hard would it have been to give UFB access to everyone at the same time" and lastly "with a bit of planning and forward thinking I would have thought it manageable" but it was a humour fail.

I won't give up my day job.

You're very correct, but very wrong if you think you're onto something.

Somewhere in the vicinity of 50% of NZ premises can get VDSL2 now and the figure getting ADSL2+ is now well over 85% with RBI.

Only 70% will get UFB so logic would dictate that yes, people who can get VDSL2 will get UFB. It's nothing to do with the rollout, it's simple statistics.

If you're suggesting that areas are being cherry picked to deliver faster speeds, much like the claims people are making with cable, I'd have to ask exactly how you'd see that being logical?

But the big problem with VDSL2 is the more people on the same cabinet the slower it goes I myself have gone from 36Mbps to 27Mbps that's -9Mbps not cool at all

I'm in the same boat, in Manly, 2018. And I will have left home by then, and I have no vdsl. The dissapojntment is real.

What I find stupid is they did the whole of Albany in Year 1 and they haven't done any other area at the same time.

Manly too, on the far reaches directly to the exchange. No VDSL, no UFB in the near future. Frustrating.

Interesting article from 2011 which mentions a BERL (Business and economic research ltd) report suggesting the following areas for priority early UFB deployment areas for key economic growth. I wonder how many of these area's are in the next few years or already have UFB ....

"BERL's favoured priority targets were downtown Auckland, Newmarket and Grafton, Penrose, Takapuna, Devonport, Whangaparaoa, Snells Beach, Warkworth, Wellsford, Helensville, Pukekohe and Waiuku."

I guess I'm lucky given that the area I'm in connects straight to the exchange and most of the people in the suburb I'm in are hardly the sort who are interested in getting VDSL let alone a high volume flat rate internet plan. Been here for a year and no problems but mind you we also have Vodafone cable going through the area which probably helps in off loading many from the copper to cable resulting in not experiencing the speed downgrade you experienced. Anyway, I'm all excited about UFB eventually getting to the area - progress being made every day bit by bit - we've got the green ducts coming out of the ground so I'm assuming it won't be too long before we can start getting UFB installed. The big question is where I'm going to put the ONT - hopefully they can put it on the wall near the power point behind the tv because then I can run an Ethernet cable from there to my hg659b and I'll be all good in the hood.
