Which is why if you want an official line, please contact our Media department. http://www.vodafone.co.nz/our-company/media-centre/ Everybody on Geekzone surely knows by now that we are not official spokespeople and that we say what we know to be true at the time. Things literally change within minutes and what I say now might not be correct in a hour.

PS. The service is only going to be available from March next year. Why on Earth assume the companies who don't offer anything now for something that doesn't exist yet won't have something by then? /boggle

I wonder how many ISPs are going to continue to provide routers that only have a throughput of around ~100mbit (or physically can't top it i.e. have 100mbit ports), as standard on their gigabit plans. Does anyone do that with 200mbit plans?

I see on the Vodafone community they are saying they won't be offering Gigabit internet in Dunedin

"...the internet cant really go much faster for now"... really? well not if you don't offer any faster plans it wont. I thought the idea of Dunedin Businesses and homes all connected together and able to share files and video around between them was the point (ok marketing was the point, but you know what I mean)

That quote is from a Vodafone staff member, not an official Vodafone spokesperson. The NBR posted our official response:
http://www.nbr.co.nz/opinion/orcon-puts-price-plans-winning-gigatown "Vodafone spokesman Brad Pogson says his company is preparing a one gig service for Dunedin home and business customers. He notes his company already provides a 200Mbit/s service."

That's the problem with "communities" on an official site. If a member of the staff posts something, it's gospel - customers can't distinguish between official and personal. I didn't see the post but if the person is marked as "Vodafone Staff"...

Yep looks pretty official to me, full of marketing speak and suchlike. It looks almost exactly like a pre-prepared press statement

me thinks they might have had a change of mind after the left hand spoke to the right....

nothing there that is incorrect.  "currently unable to offer"  is bang on.  Gigatown doesn't launch until March. No ISP can currently offer Gb Fibre to the winning gigatown.

I think it would be extremely unlikely that any RSP would provide CPE that didn't have Gigabit lan ports for any plans that were offered above 100mb. Otherwise they would be setting themselves up for a public flogging.

Offering routers that can route 930Mbps on the other hand is another issue entirely. While there are plenty of devices out there that can easily route 700 - 800Mbps WAN<->LAN, there aren't a lot of options at a reasonable price point that can route at full Gigabit line speed.

I already said that we will see people posting "I am on gigabit UFB but the speedtest on my iPad over WiFi is not showing gigabit speeds"

I'm calling Orcon today to request a switch from 100Mbps to Gigatown plan as soon as it's ready in Feb-Mar 15.

I don't get this:

Orcon Gigatown 1000/500 plan with free gigabit router and free Roku 3: $95 per month

Wicked Networks same plan without Roku: $150 per month + $400 for gigabit router

Isn't that a "tiny bit" uncompetitive offer by Wicked Networks? How can they expect any signups with prices like that?

Wicked did say somewhere they would have plans but at a higher price. I guess when you are a smaller company compared to say Orcon , they are unable to offer plans that match the $95 a month.
Less customers = Higher costs. More customers = Lower costs.

I contacted the WIC owner, and he said $95 plan means severe loss, but Orcon is apparently willing to take a few losses at this stage to build up market share.
Makes perfect sense when you think about it.
