thabass:After a very interesting day... Any word from DD re a PIR?
A couple of organizations I spoke with today mentioned interest in Azure DNS and Cloudflare.
Any thoughts/recommendations on other DNS providers?

"Interesting" would be putting it mildly. Luckily most emails sent during this time have been delivered albeit delayed.
Both Cloudflare and Azure are good from what I understand, we only have experience with Cloudflare and only on a few domains, soon to be a lot more.
Am I correct in saying that if you're DNS was managed by Cloudflare, even if you're domains were hosted by DD the requests still resolved? - How does that work? - when DD was down, they would not be able to point to the Cloudflare DNS.

Yes, that's correct. While you still wouldn't be able to login to their website and manage your domain because of their network/system outage, your DNS would have still resolved and so your website and email and any other services that had records on Cloudflare DNS would be online. The reason is because the only job the Registrar has (DiscountDomains) is to delegate the DNS at the .nz Registry when you set your nameservers for the first time. Once it's set and after some propagation time, the .nz Registry Root DNS servers start answering for your domain. If someone looks up your domain, and there is no cached DNS record, the resolver will ask the .nz Registry root servers for the authoritative DNS for your domain, which will be Cloudflare. The Registrar has no part to play in the ongoing operation of the DNS if you use a 3rd party DNS provider once the name servers have been delegated. Hope this helps!
I got sent this from DD in response to an email ticket we sent in after not getting them on the phone.
Not super pleased...
I have asked for the PIR or offered assistance in helping them get a customer impact statement.

The response is unsatisfactory. Little to no detail and no explanation on how they will be avoiding a half-day outage again in future.

Hint: They wont.
Best thing to do is open a cloudflare account, export the zones from DD and import to cloudflare, then update NS records. Takes about 5-10mins and costs nothing for a far superior service.
