yup, good call: tried it this morning @ 7am and it was 1440 down and 131 up.

I measured until 1am. The results were the same if not worse. It was fine all yesterday untill tea time. I've been on 3.5 Mbps for 3 or 4 weeks and the lowest speed i had was 3.1. I can see where people have had problems ever since they changed plans, but its weird that mine which has been working fine all along suddenly go from one extreme to the other.

Did you know that being too close to the exchange can be a problem with adsl?? Strange but true (well I am taking their word for it of course).
I had very irregular speeds so logged 3 days and sent it to Xtra helpdesk. The reply puzzled me, it said I was less than a km away from the exchange and I possibly needed some equipment added to the line. Thinking this was a typo I rang and was told that when broadband is activated they have to increase the 'voltage'. If you are too close to the exchange then this increase in voltage can degrade the adsl service. While on the phone he ran another test and found a possible line fault as well so a tech is booked next week to check out the line fault and if the line speed does not improve then I am to book another tech to add some sort of attentuator / resistor to my line.

I guess this is my new thing I have learnt today.

My speeds on 3.5MB can be as low as 350kbs up to 1.5Mbs although this morning I was getting 2Mb/s, but it was at 6am. Because of my distance xtra feel I should be able to get the full 3.5Mb (taking into account congestion during peak times I know this improbable.)

Ran some speed tests using Linux and Windows, and got surprisingly different results.

I have blogged about it and perhaps its worth some further investigation. My testing wasnt very scientific (again), but there is something there to look closer at (i.e. Linux giving me massively better downloads than XP).

I have heard before that *nix systems perform better on the net, I know my Mandrake did when I had Dialup.

Anyone tried it out with osx86? Will try if I can get my ethernet going. Fingers crossed.

Have you tried it out with a live cd?

Ok, so i finally got my ethernet going in OS X 10.4.4 and ran the speed test. I finally got my 3.5Mb vs the max 2.5mb i was getting in XP.
It's all very intersting, If I get time i will conduct a proper study of it, will fresh installs and all. But for now OS X on my Toshiba laptop is where I'm staying.
