By the way, the line going to the left of the current voice module, where does currently go, in a FTTH setup it should go nowhere except maybe to the yet to be installed ATA.

That sticks out from the bricks outside, anticipating copper I'm sure, even though I told them there's none of that here.

There's also a second Ethernet cable with it that isn't connected to anything. Another useless bit of labour I imagine.

Probably not useless, but you certainly won't need all it's functionality. If you want to plug more than one phone in to the WRP400 then you can probably still use it for that.

It's encouraging to see an end user excited by all the cool new networking, even though other house owners in the subdivision might see it as more of a techno thing that should be forgotten about.

Since you have fibre instead of a phone line, you need the Residential Gateway to create an internal phone line from the VoIP service that runs over the fibre. This means phone service comes over the broadband instead of broadband coming over the phone line. If the Belkin is an ADSL router then it will pretty much be replaced by the residential gateway, which is essentially an ethernet router with both phone and data output.

The Residential Gateway will have an outlet for each phone number, so the top voice panel simply shares that phone number onto several outlets, quite handy since you are using 5 phone outlets and took out the daisychain wiring. Copper connections also benefit from the panel's alarm output and test-disconnect features that you don't need. As you probably realise, 8 port patch panels are seldom enough if you have 2 to 4 outlets in every room...

I am interested that one of Maverick's examples shows the ONT separated from the CPE in another cabinet. Maybe a good idea (if easily identified which cabinet is which), so that curious people aren't tempted to unplug connectors and get dust or fingerprints on the fibre ends. Singlemode fibre has a core smaller than some specs of dust and a fairly strong laser! Don't know if thats ever a problem with indoor ONTs but fingers etc could be.

Time to find a new industry!

Just a wee update. Not quite there but almost.

Set up my account with WorldxChange. Took about 2 weeks to arrange Chorus to come out, but they installed the goods a couple days ago.

So by the sidewalk, there's a green-lidded underground canister holding lots of cables, and the technician connected my existing ducting to it. Yay! Strung the fibre through the hole in the wall just fine, too.

My wall of stuff now looks like this. Patch panels top-left, router top-right, ONT under that, and a backup battery for the ONT:

Technician connected the router's phone port to the phone module (blue and white wires). Not quite what Cyril suggested but good enough:

Technician also showed me what the fibre actually looks like with its protective layers stripped away. Jeez it's tiny. Looked like it was less than 1mm thick.

Right now, the Henderson exchange isn't set up fully for this yet. ONT isn't talking to the exchange properly. Chorus tech said it'll probably take another week or so for them to fix it (need to order in a special card at the exchange or something). So my gear will keep trying to connect in the meantime, and maybe it'll start working by March.

Apparently once the exchange stuff is installed, Chorus will only find out officially about it ~3 days after, because there's different offices around the country that the information has to pass through first (I think Alcatel has to do this part or something). So I'll actually be able to tell when the work's been done before Chorus does (assuming it's done correctly).

This Chorus tech has been really helpful; been ringing me with updates as he finds out more. So props to him! And I'll let him know when the equipment starts connecting (or at least tries to) so that we can shave off the 3 days of waiting.

Hi, told you it would be alright on the day. The fibre is actually 128um in diameter thats the glass cladding diameter, the inner core is 9um for single mode as used here, but its coated with a 0.9mm plastic sheath, then bundled with any others in the tube (assuming loose tube filled) thats then kevlar wrapped and finally PVC sheathed.

There was a problem with the back haul build, this was actually supposed to have been completed in 2009 with a custom net build, it was not completed I was advised by Telecom this morning, should be fixed in a day or 2 they have said, so what should happen is that our side is already completed and as soon as connectivity is fixed the device should auto provision, so just keep checking the dial tone on your phone, thanks for posting your install photos as well, I like to see how the installers are doing the jobs, not all have been that good.

Chorus just rang me to say that it should be working. Did a hard reset on the Linksys router, let it download its configuration files for a few minutes, and voila, fibre now works.

Impressive. And my phone works, too, right off the bat.
