itey:

my mother lives just outside of Auckland in a lifestyle block currently on 4g via spark and peak speeds are abysmal. Previously on vodafone and changed as much the same. Have 2x antenna's and good coverage. Seriously considering starlink with the reduced hardware cost. How reliable and non-tech-person proof is starlink now? does it drop in/out at all? could it be reliably used for work teleconferencing?

Thank you

I had an almost verbatim scenario. Purchased it for my mum and going gangbusters.

@zenourn

Me too.  Wonder how many other GZ members are part of the 23.

You win on the speeds, my fastest was only 341Mbps

I'm also part of the club. My max was only 324 but I'm not complaining. Beats the 8-10 I got on ADSL when it wasn't raining.

Ordered Sunday - on my desk Weds lunch (AKL-CHC metro)

its geolocked to my home but it did see the satellites from my office balcony :)

I'll test tonight when home!

Things may be changing.  My speeds were 150-250mb/s (max 325) until a software update 3 days ago.  My residential plan is now described as the standard plan.  Download is around 90mb/s.

The latest specs published by Starlink refer to service plans described as standard, priority, mobile, mobile priority.  Standard has expected download speeds of 25-100 mb/s. Priority 40-220.  Mobile 5-50.  Mobile priority 40-220.

In view of Starlink's recent abandonment of the 1TB residential cap and GB overage fee that was to have been implemented in the US to reduce residential congestion and the stories about some businesses choosing the residential plan for the same speeds, we may now be looking at hard speed caps.

Is anyone else dropping below 100mb/s?

Everything fine for me, in Bay of Islands.  My account shows 'Standard' too, as probably most/everyone now.  My Starlink has firmware 8cd5bb78-2b4d-46d4-95e0-a4cda85b39e0.uterm.release - which seems to be the most recent shown here - https://starlinktrack.com/firmware/

Suggest you give more details about how you tested your speed, and your location.  Did you use the Advanced Speed Test in the App? Seems the most reliable way.

Testing via 2.4Ghz Wifi (rather than 5Ghz) or a flaky Ethernet-dongle connection (100Mbps rather than 1Gbps) could give a seeming maximum 100Mbps - less than actually available.

Its possible if you're in a high-demand area you may be seeing some contention and even lower prioritised traffic.

no drops here and I am on the standard plan too already

speeds this morning 260 Up /28 down 28ms

its been pretty consistent speeds too ... even better now I have installed a TP-Link AX20 router and bypassed the SL router and have it on my home MESH network

I streamed 1080 HD from my Yolobox to my YT channel on sunday for 2 hours without a drop ... no way I could have done that on 4G lol

I use Starlink in bypass mode with a Fritzbox.  Speed tests are over ethernet.  Speeds normal for a month then a sudden drop.  I may need to factory reset the Skylink router to see if the dongle is a problem.  Location rural near Katikati.

Back to normal.  My TP-Link switch needed to be powered off/on.  Something internal was holding it to 100mb/s despite all the relevant test ports displaying the green 1gb LED.

Hard speed caps in the future for Standard are still a possibility.  The 3 Priority plans (1TB, 2TB, 6TB) state that once the priority data is used, then unlimited standard data will be supplied.  If Standard speeds remain high then who would pay $425 - $2,507 per month for the Priority plans unless a public IP is necessary?  Maybe Starlink's intention is to boost Priority plan speeds toward 1GB with the new v2 satellites and leave Standard as is.

That would be worth it for people that are located in a congested cell and want the best possible service (eg. businesses or people working from home and really need it)

It would be interesting to know how well the more heavily loaded cells in NZ are performing.  Is there anyone in a wait listed cell that can share some peak time speed test results?

The lack of competition that Starlink has in some areas in a concern, and it will be interesting to see what happens to prices when Project Kuiper become available in a couple of years...
