redstorm: ADSL2+ SNr and Line Attenuation numbers from my TG582n

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1.112 / 13.107

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12,6 / 0,0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 7,5 / 19,5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 12,7 / 12,1


This is what my ADSL2+ connection was reporting on the Thompson TG582n

19DB increased to 23DB with VDSL

VDSL always has slightly higher attenuation because it uses higher frequencies (which attenuate faster). I would actually have expected the difference to be greater. I would guess that the small difference indicates that line length is only a part of what is causing attenuation on the line. And I'd say you can probably rule out the modem as the source of the problem.

I'd try installing a master filter and if that doesn't fix it then I'd try talking to Snap to see if you can get them to lodge a fault with Chorus.

I don't think an increase in attenuation is unusual when switching from ADSL to VDSL, but both figures look too high if you're as close to cabinet as you think and both internal and external wiring is up to scratch.

What is dec? Is that your ETP? Maybe put up a photo of what you've done to the wiring in there?

sorry Demarcation point.

Where the copper comes into my house i have soldered cat6 (blue pair) to the inbound pair to the only remaining phone jack where the Fritz is located. all other jacks i have removed at the Demarcation point.

As the crow flys the distance between my house and the cabinet

Cabinet
36° 46.830' S, 174° 39.309' E
House
36° 46.665' S, 174° 39.588' E

Distance = 0.5148 km

Actual distance will be longer due to cable routing. Herald Island only has one cabinet.

My ADSL Att was 4 and it went to 7 when I changed to VDSL.

Ah right. Is there any way you can disconnect the cat6 and connect the fritzbox directly to inbound pair at the demarc to see what that gives? 

I originally soldered mine too but was told that scotchloks\gel connectors are prefered to keep moisture out; and they're more convenient too IMO. EDIT: Also I seem to remember reading a suggestion that in same cases the wires used are coated\plated and so it can be difficult to get a decent connection by soldering; not really sure of the truth of that.

I have a spare 2 wire jack i could connect directly to the cable and see if it makes a difference. the Cat 6 that is used is the same that i was getting 13Mbit on my old ADSL2+ connection though.

Yeah cat6 shouldn't cause any issues and should actually be good, but I'm just wondering if you can connect directly to incoming pair with nothing else connected to take all of your internal wiring\connections out of the picture  (including the incoming pair -> cat 6 -> internal wire(?) ->  jackpoint + soldering) If you're still seeing that high attenuation I would suggest contacting snap so they can get chorus to have a look into it.

Your ADSL attenuation also looked too high though. It just didn't affect your speed as much.

Just in case someone is interested, my attenuation was 2db on ADSL, 5db on VDSL 8b, and is now 7db on VDSL 17a. I was using the same Fritz!box in all 3 cases.

Ok here are the results from a 2 wire jack directly attached to the inbound pair.



Speed has increased both down and up, but the errors are through the roof.

OK rebooted the router and resynced at 17 and 10

Hmm, I think you've pretty much eliminated everything other than the line from the cabinet to your ETP. IMO it's time to call snap and get your line checked out.

I just had my 2 unused jacks around the house disconnected today and sync speed did not really go up at all. Less than 350M from the cabinet with VDSL2 and VOIP. No master filter installed. From ETP, it's straight to the DSL jack.

Your attenuation is quite high. Now that you've got your internal wiring sorted it might be time to get snap in on the issue.

Apologies if this has been asked already and answered, can anyone tell me what the most likely cause of our upload speed only being about 60% of the attainable rate? We get pretty close to maximum attainable on download. This is using Speedtest.net and to different hosts.

Download is about 21Mbps and download is about 6Mbps. Modem shows 23M down and 10M up attainable.

Edit:Just read the forist post at the bottom and will see what that does. Problem is we are using a Draytek 2750 not a Fritzbox
