The thruster turned up down the road the other day, but they haven't started digging yet. Last time I looked at the UFB map it said August 2014, so they might be running a bit early in Hamilton.
I don't have a problem with the green minion, but I'd hope it would be installed on the boundary between properties, like the black power boxes are. If one pops up halfway along my front boundary it will be a bit of an eyesore, as I don't have a retaining wall or fence between me and the street.

Hamilton isn't a chorus area so the network build and architecture is different (as is the hardware vendor). You're not going to see a FAT like the Chorus ones.

I think that, along with the misleading photography, is the crux of the argument against Stuff's 'angle' in the story - there is a retaining wall and the boundary on both sides of the property look inappropriate - driveways on the uphill side and WE power transformers on the downhill side. I've walked past quite a few FATs, but I can't recall seeing any that are smack bang in the front of someone's lawn... It would be interesting to know what the policy is about where to place the FATs given particular circumstances.

In many ways I do feel some sympathy for the home owners. It looks like they have engaged the media in order to push their argument that the FAT is 15cm in the wrong place, but the journalist clearly decided that the story line around the ugliness of the unit would generate the most interest and asked questions to get quotes that suit that angle.

So, it would appear there is a loggerhead between the homeowner and Chorus (i.e. both believe they are right and the other is wrong). My question therefore becomes - what is the correct and most effective avenue to resolve the apparent 15cm difference between the two parties? Is there an ombudsman or mediator that can look over the evidence of both sides? Surely that's a better avenue than being led by the media or going to court...

That would explain why I haven't seen any of them in the recently completed areas nearby.

If they pained the thing a similar colour to the timber of the garden, it would be just about invisible unless you were up close

I think they should plant another bush below the retaining wall. If they were moving their retaining wall out to the revised boundary position then maybe Chorus would consider it a legitimate complaint.

The photo was stupid but I liked this part of the story...

Telecommunications Forum chief executive David Stone said there was nothing people could do about RMA-exempted infrastructure being erected outside their properties, but he did not expect that would stem complaints "given we are a nation of ‘Nimbys' ".

Time to find a new industry!

Unless I am somewhat mistaken the ~~FATs~~ Minions are on Road Reserve / burm or similar outside your actual boundary so although you may consider it part of your land, it's actually "owned" by the council or government.

Its amazing. Govt decides to put in millions of dollars of brand new network. People complain that its 15cm into their boundary.

Why don't the councils complain when most home owners take claim to the reserve between their boundary and the footpath.

Kiwis never cease to amaze me.

I suspect that they resurveyed and put in the retaining wall based on that.

On a slight side note here.
Finally got ufb installed and running at my place. :) They came and dug up and removed the green box that everyone has around here and replaced just with PVC pipe coming out of the concrete.

That's a pretty average (and bloody ugly) effort IMO.

If I ever get UFB, I'll insist on doing the visible stuff myself... But I'm probably never getting UFB. :-(
