Sorry to dig up an old thread but I was searching for information on UFB and VDSL in Wellington and stumbled across it.

It seems to me as though Wellington has been left in the lurch a little bit, 2019 is too long to wait for faster broadband. I live only a few km's away from the CBD in Karori and have excruciatingly slow and inconsistent adsl, whereas a friend of mine is moving to the Wairapa and despite having a 90 minute commute to the city will be on a fiber connection. I was supposed to get VDSL but the line is too noisy, I'm also marginally too far away from Vodafones cable network (down a private road) so I'm stuck with ADSL.

I've written to our Local MP Grant Robertson asking him to raise our concerns with the government and put pressure on Chorus to accelerate the roll out in Wellington. In the probable event that they ignore that request I have also asked him to put pressure on Chorus to resume installing VDSL in the concerned suburbs as a stop gap measure.

I'm sure both these requests will be ignored, but putting pressure on does help so please email, tweet, or call grant's office and let them know that its a concern for Wellingtonians, its already putting us at a competitive disadvantage.

Where? And "a few kms" doesn't mean that's where the exchange is. You could be stuck on a conklin, although I wouldn't bet on that in Wellington's CBD.

Which street in Karori? Someone may be able to give you an idea of what you can expect.

If you look at Masterton on the Chorus map, most all of their UFB rollout has been completed, compared to Wellington.

Why? Because Masterton is a lot smaller and takes many less years to finish. If 2019 is too long for you to wait, then you need to move to a place that has it already in Wellington (or hop over the hill even).

Someone has to be at the end of the queue (2019). Why should your area in Karori be given favour over another area?

If running it to schools is a priority then why is it that in Napier an area with 4 schools in it is left out for an area that has 1 school in it eg: Tamatea vs Marianui Oh I know why because mobsters make more money and they just gotta have ultra fast BB to make instant dope deals right

Well its not just Karori, its a few suburbs in Wellington.

Suburban Wellington also has Embassies and Consulates which would benefit from Broadband. What I asked for was not UFB at the expense of elsewhere but either accelerated UFB or a compromised solution of finishing the roll out of VDSL.

Plus selling and buying costs too much money, I might as well just pay vodafone to dig up my street and run a cable to me (I'm 90 metres from a cable connection, 50 metres if you go through a neighbours section rather than following the road, p.s. anyone know if that's feasible and what the cost would be?).

I've also heard that Chorus is spending the 2018 budget now, so will the roll out be abandoned before it gets to us?

It's not just Wellington.  It's a general issue with Chorus-serviced areas.

My date says 2019 too, and I'm in Auckland.  I did move, as my first area wasn't in a planned UFB area.  There's someone within wifi distance is transmitting as Megatel-UFB.  Actually there's two of them!  I dunno if it doubles up advertisements or what.  But it seems that they don't like to fill in the gaps?  And that may be related to living near a school.

5 years isn't really that long.  And really you shouldn't feel vicitimised.  Rollout takes time.  And with tax payer money going towards such things and giving a forced monopoly there's really nothing that can be done short of moving to a new city!  Chorus have had more important things to do like have a competition about who will get gigabit UFB, which now goes to Dunedin.  Whilst UFF are offering Gigabit across their coverage area, and having timely rollouts... You're not alone though, Chorus have got more regions than any other provider in New Zealand.  And they own the existing ADSL infrastructure, so why should they rush?

I wouldn't worry if I had VDSL but they have stopped all investment in copper. Sometimes I'm lucky to get 200kbps with DSL, sometimes it takes a couple of minutes just to load the speedtest.net page and sometimes its fine, its congestion that causes my issues. If chorus isn't fixing issues because of the UFB rollout then its hurting all of us.

I'm not feeling victimised, I'm well aware that someone has to be last. However, Wellington is an entrepreneurial and tech focussed city, and the local MP's and council should be pushing our interests.

You may find that 3g works better.  Wellington has had Citylink for a long time to give faster speeds at least in the CBD.  I dunno if there are any other providers that you can choose from.  But with ADSL performance like that maybe starting a petition in your area could help.  It's probably just yet-another-conklin.  But there's more likely to be accessible fibre for it to be updated.

You have to understand that Chorus are orientated profit not service.  If it's hard/expensive to improve your experience why should they?  It's not like you can use someone else in most situations.

if you are within distance for VDSL, and really do have a noisy line you may be able to get your line fixed.   If there are huge numbers of CRC errors and ADSL1 sync then maybe it's DSL related.  But IME poor speeds with decent sync rates are usually backhaul related.  If the sync speed is terrible you can log a fault,. but DSL is pretty resilient, even on a phone line that struggles with normal calls it'll usually keep sync.

Citylink is CBD only, it wouldn't be available in Karori.

What street is this on again that can only get ADSL?

All Schools with the Chorus Areas have already had their UFB or RBI network rolled out to them approx two yrs ago - it is up to the schools and the RSPs to make use of this possiblity - this has nothing to do with mobsters or even the general UFB role out.

UFB in Wellington is low down on the priority list because there is already Vodafone cable so the demand won't be as high.

I'm also in Wellington and Weta and that business district are getting it this year. Whereas the rest of the area apart from seatoun is 2017-2018. Sigh.
