Thanks!
How come some ADSL ISPs show as 10Mbps down, 2Mbps up, others show as 20Mbps down, 1Mbps up?
quickymart: Might give it a go for my sister too.
Sure, she can ask any questions using our chat or phone line (0508 2COMPARE)

It's up to ISPs. ISP can offer different speed. Some of them offer speeds that below theoretical maximum to avoid people rage if speed doesn't reach maximum level (even if "up to" mentioned).
Also, there are ADSL, ADSL2+ with different speeds.
For instance, Bigpipe - ADSL with 2 different speed options:

Really? Can you provide an example of an ISP who rate limits DSL subscribers (apart from that Bigpipe plan)? Or are these just ISPs who advertise "10Mbps" but, like everyone else, give you a connection as fast as your line will go?

Rates? Almost every, I guess.
For instance:
MegaTEL - http://www.megatel.co.nz/broadband_landline/naked_residential
VelocityNET - http://www.velocitynet.co.nz/?page_id=309
Another example without any speeds but with notice about "max speeds allowed by copper connection" - WASP - http://www.waspnet.co.nz/internet-services/adsl-vdsl-pricing

And I'd bet money that if you get a connection from them it will go "as fast as your line will allow."

It can't be faster than your line limits - that's for sure :)

coffeebaron: So how did Stuff Fibre make it to no1?

Thank you for your notice.
We've contacted with Stuff Fibre and informed them about their incorrect ads. They assured us that this ad will be removed shortly.
Did anyone notice the giant wrap around ad on the Sunday Star Times on Sunday? It was one of those ones which replace the front and back page, and a prominent part of the ad was 'Rated number 1 by Broadband Compare'!

I don't think you understand. It's very rare (not unknown, and was more common 5-10 years ago) for an NZ ISP to sell internet access over ADSL that is limited to a speed lower than the line is capable of.
ADSL2, on Chorus gear, can't do 2Mbps upstream. Yet you list 2degrees, Voyager, Actrix, etc ADSL as being 2Mbps up.
ADSL2, on anyone's gear, with a good line, is capable of more than 10MBps downstream. Yet you list 2degrees, Compass, Voyager, TrustPower, etc ADSL as 10Mbps down.
To muddy the waters, if you're using ADSL2 on someone's LLU network (e.g. Slingshot or Flip, in some areas), and have an Annex M capable modem, you *can* get 2Mbps upstream, if you turn that feature on in your modem. I've just set up a connection for our church like this; we get 16Mbps down and 2Mbps up.
Can you please explain why your site displays different speed numbers for different ADSL2 providers? E.g. why do you say 2degrees is 10Mbps up and 2Mbps down? Why do you say Bigpipe is 20Mbps down and 1Mbps up? Why do you say 2talk is 24Mbps down and 1Mbps up?

Well, I see your point. But you need to understand what we publish only info we can get from providers or from their websites. If they announce 10/1 - we publish 10/1, if it is 20/2 or 100/100 or whatever - we publish 20/2 , 100/100 or whatever. We do not "invent" plans for providers, no way. We just show available information as a catalog/comparison tool. If you don't understand why "provider X" announced ADSL 10/2 - you should ask them :)
Also, if we have some incorrect info (like typo or some really strange listings - ADSL 50/20), we research this. Contact with this provider if required as well.
Sorry for late reply. Most people in our office got sick or have sick children this week.
This week is not the healthiest week for our company, huh.

OK. Bigpipe says they are "5-20Mbps down" and "Up to 1Mbps up", so you list them as 20/1.
When I input an address into the 2degrees site that can only get ADSL, it says
which is pretty honest - they could do what everyone else does and only list the max speed. You list them as 10/2 -- no idea where that 2 up comes from!
The 2talk site says "Up to 24Mbps download, up to 1.4Mbps upload" -- you list them as 24/1. 1.4Mbps is 40% faster than 1Mbps.
I didn't carefully scan through all the providers to pick those examples, I just chose a few at random.
Everyone gets varying speeds on ADSL2. Your site is -- based on these examples -- aiming to regurgitate whatever a providers' marketing says the speed will be, and not even doing a very good job of that. People who use your site will say "oh, broadband compare says bigpipe is twice as fast as 2degrees" when it isn't. If nothing else, you're running the risk of an angry provider getting their lawyers to write you letters when they realise you're making claims that their service is much slower than their competitors. And people like me claiming that SOMEONE IS WRONG ON THE INTERNET.

- Depending on your connection, ADSL has the potential to deliver download speeds of up to 24Mbps and upload speeds of up to 1Mbps. The national average is around 10Mbps download.

Thanks for your ongoing feedback and highlighting the error on the 2degrees upload speed, that has been changed yesterday. Can we ask how you would quote a speed if you had a site like ours and we will factor it in for future improvements.
PS Regarding 2talk and "1.4": we had some technical issues with .XX values that we were solved. Now we are updating those plans with .XX values.

Good to hear!
I'd lump all ADSL2 plans in (apart from the delberately slowed down ones like Bigpipe's 3Mbps plan) together, listing them all at the same speed. Chorus aim at a 10Mbps minimum speed for ADSL2 so it'd be fair to list that, or the maximum (24Mbps) for everyone - so 24/1 or 10/1. Same for VDSL2 -- say 50/10.
I'd also link to the truenet results where available, and incorporate them into your ratings. Currently MyRepublic is shown as the "best" ISP at my address, yet TrueNet says their peak time speeds are half their off peak speeds, and they're the only ISP tested to have performance that bad.
