Launching today, Broadband Compare:

New broadband comparison website offers Kiwis the chance to find the best broadband deals on offer in New Zealand

AUCKLAND, 30 June 2016. For the first time ever, Kiwis will be able to visit a free-to-use, one-stop-shop website to see over 2,700 broadband deals on offer from 70 internet service providers currently operating in New Zealand, with the launch of broadband comparison website Broadband Compare. With the number of Kiwis online predicted to grow to 4.4 million by 2020 and as ultra-fast broadband is rolled out throughout the country, the site will become a key tool for internet consumers.

“There is a perception that there are only a handful of ISPs operating in the New Zealand market, when in reality there are actually more than 80 ISPs, offering a total of more than 2,700 packages – that’s a lot of choice,” says Broadband Compare founder and CEO Gavin Male. “Broadband Compare is the only portal that offers a comprehensive overview of the packages on offer, and the service will ultimately lead to a better deal for the consumer.”

Broadband Compare officially launches on Thursday 30th June, 2016, and Male believes that the service will help educate New Zealand consumers, making them more price-sensitive, and helping to drive competition in the industry.

“When compared to other markets internationally, New Zealand is actually very expensive for internet services, especially for higher data users1,” he says. “Broadband Compare will empower consumers to find the most appropriate broadband plan for them, at the best price.”

Another key benefit of the website is that it gives smaller internet service providers an equal voice, helping to level the playing field in a market dominated by a handful of major players. While a consumer may not know of all the ISPs operating in their region, Broadband Compare exposes the full list of market offerings, maximising competition pressure.

“Consumers actually have a lot more choice than they might think,” says Male. “The best deals out there aren’t necessarily those being offered by the major players, and a consumer might be on the wrong package for them. Broadband Compare makes it extremely easy for New Zealanders to compare broadband plans and make the right choice.”

Consumers in rural locations are also well taken care of, with a comprehensive range of wireless, copper network and VDSL broadband providers listed on Broadband Compare in areas where ultrafast fibre broadband connections aren’t yet available.

They could have restricted the address lookup to NZ...

 Edit.

Add the filter of static IP and voip and in the results is Bigpipe (which I am currently with). Would not have expected bigpipe in the results with the voip filter added (which I take to mean that voip is provided by the broadband provider).

I agree that the address list should be limited to NZ. But it seems to ignore it anyway; I entered my address in Whakatane and it listed a bunch of UFB ISPs that don't offer service there.

Oops looks like they have exceeded their Google API limit so the address lookup is broken. I can't seem to compare plans without entering an address.

yet another broadband comparison tool.

"For the first time ever"

Lolwut?

add it to the list:

www.glimp.co.nz

www.broadbandme.co.nz

http://broadband.t5.co.nz/compare

and there have been many others come and go over the years - like the consumer.org one tel me that I think has now shut down.

Much like the others I've seen, this one doesn't seem to work very well.  It thinks I can get UFB at my house (I can't).  It thinks VDSL is 200Mbps (It isn't).

It lists a whole load of ISPs that do NOT serve my area.  It has a bunch of 'options' that make no sense.

ETA:

wow.

For a site that is supposedly independent and helps to promote the "little ISPs",  they sure do seem to love love love Trustpower and MyRepublic - promoting them very heavily vs other ISPs.

When I clicked on Trustpower or MyRepublic plans, I am redirected to their site with a clear re-seller link in the URL - indicating a commission type relationship.

But other ISPs I have tried (e.g. voyager) give me the message "sorry they are not a partner of broadband compare" indicating no relationship.

This just smells like a scam to me designed to give the appearance of comparison and independence when actually they are just pushing the ISPs who pay them money.

a little bit more digging and this comes up

(when I say digging, I just clicked on the link at the bottom of the page that says "Historic version"

http://old.broadbandcompare.co.nz/page/3/

articles go back as far as April 2015 (mostly heavily promoting a MyRepublic offer) - written by the same guy from the press release Gavin Male.  So how is this a "launch" well over 12 months after it was actually launched?

The filters on the extras didn't do anything either. I selected all of them and was still offered bigpipe.

Well, seems to totally suggest providers that cant service here at all (as in, they dont even operate in the same Region...)

2talk adsl is listed at 14mbit up, clearly thats meant to be 1.4mbit

And, at least on an iPhone, it scrolls back to the top of the page every time you select a filter.

It's titled "NZ Life", so I guess the person (or people) behind broadband compare know that guy.

For me it is blatantly recommending Unlimited Internet above everything else and has a referral link. So, this is not at all non-bias. Just another advertising medium for ISP's with a large advertising budget...

I've just tried in now and it's pushing fibre plans. The only problem...fibre won't be available until November.

Edit: One of the options is 200/200 VDSL. Where can I sign up???

Really stupid how they take whatever the ISP advertises as max speed - ie 2Talk obviously have theoretical maximums listed so come up as 24Mbps/1.4 and bigpipe shows a much more realistic 10/1.

And why would they let WISP's show when they don't have network in the given address area?!

As for recommending Unlimited Internet... how is that company still running at the price they charge?!.. basically giving away services.
