just signed up for snap vdsl2

current adsl2 line attenuation is 9db so hopefully I get ok sync rate on vdsl2

You'll likely see 3-5db of additional attenuation going from ADSL to VDSL, but we have people in this thread who are getting pretty decent speeds out of lines with those kinds of figures.

How's your internal wiring?

cyril came over, removed the old adsl2 filter and retwisted pairs

it's going to a single jack point

Sweet. So 9db after all the wiring fixes?

When you say 're-twisted' are you talking about joining wires together?

So incoming line straight to one jackpoint and nothing else in the equation? Should be good to go then; let us know how it looks when you're connected. I think mine was around 9 or 10 db on ADSL. Now 13 on VDSL and I can't complain about the speeds!

Straight to one jackpoint only, nothing else

It was 9db before he came, but he clipped and existing scotch locks and put new ones on. We didn't expect any difference from the exercise but it didn't hurt just to make sure.

I can't remember the term he used but the cable is twisted, when people connect the pair they untwist it, so he just made sure they were ok

I was going to get cat5e run but the cable already running from the etp is higher grade which I wasn't aware of

I'm only 500m away from the cabinet, no idea on line length, so bit disappointed with 9db but oh well. One thing I'd like to try is a new cable run from the plinth to the ETP but not sure that'd make much difference

Damager: Ripped a couple of videos off YouTube and it was downloading at a consistent 4 to 5MB/s. Is it coming from the local cache?

Could have been, but I've seen 100+mbit/sec from certain Australian hosts on Snap's network. (Hint: I am responsible for performance metrics at Snap :)

@JamesL: Ok, sounds like you've had a top notch job done there! Not much else you can do but wait and see how it goes when your VDSL is hooked up! Should you find the connect speeds less than you were hoping for, we're gathering quite a bit of collective knowledge on SNRM tweaking around here, so I'm sure we can assist with that if you're interested! :)

I'm not sure what SNR tweaking capability the zylex p870h has, anyone that has one know?

I opted for the zylex so that I could bridge it with my existing router

As per my previous I pushed my SNRM Tweak up to -70. This seemed stable so I thought what the hell I'll just try straight to -80... this didn't go so well:

That was after roughly 40 minutes and while it didn't seem to cause any issues in that time, I decided it was pushing it a bit too much! So I pulled back to -75. This seems to be going OK so far, though it's getting might close to 10 CRCPM... :)

Hmm, -75 seems to be your practical limit by the looks! Keep a close eye on that CRCPM tho, it could go up still!

ARGH i lost DLM-1 :(

Minimum 25ms to anywhere now, doubles latency to auckland. Lame. It looks like my DSL got me kicked off at 4am this morning. I guess i can drop SNR and hope it swaps me back? Anything else i can change?

Well nearly 4 weeks nothing has improved more than about 1Mbit.

Well it's not really the point of what I am using the bandwidth for (Very large backups), it's the fact it was 70Mbit for 2 years, the ISP who took me over ASSURED me I would get back to my normal rate or they would escalate now they are telling me they can't do anything. Not impressed. Essentially a 30% drop in speed.

@sidefx: Oh, ok, that's not so bad then. Still, you're pretty close to the wire (by our estimation anyway!).
