Not too sure if this has been said already but anyway .....
One thing Telecom have forgotten to announce is that a large percentage of the population who are able to get broadband live far enough away from an exchange that they will never receive the 3,5 mb line speeds. So for those of you who have automatically been upgraded or for those of you who have changed plans and are now paying more for the new speeds, you have been conned. There is no way you are going to get those speeds unless they go ADSL2 or ADSL2+ which can push a stronger signal to further distances.
I think it was this fact that has pushed the goverment over the edge with regards to regulation.
The only problem now of course, is why would Telecom upgrade the lines and exchanges to ADSL2 and then share them with the other ISPs? We have a viscious circle forming here.
There is of course the other problem that 12 into 1 doesn't go.
We have only one link out of Australasia that has only so much bandwidth. Who is going to invest money into that to increase it with such a low investment return from such a small population. I can't see iHug, Orcon and the rest investing billions to share 2 million customers.
Well, were do I start.

I have a 3.5Mb down/ 126kbs up, in reality this is 430Kbs down/ 30Kbs up at best. For most of May it has been 15Kb down(yep, thats not a mistype 15kbs download).
I started using a paradise dial up connection because it was faster that xtra.
In response to my emails to adsl helpdesk, your account is capped and I have exceeded my limit.
Hhhmmm 2 days into a new month, with a 15kbs download, I managed to exceed 10GB. Wow. They must use the same calculator that the Advertising crew use.
Recommend using a different ISP.
roll on the government growing a bigger pair and splitting open the network, the Country needs it.
We are a third world country when it comes to internet and that's embarrasing.

Are you using wireless router or modem at home? If yes did you secure it? Someone might steal your megabits.. Are you sure noone else is using your connection at home? No brother or sister using Bittorrent and downloading a lot?
And zapdog you can always check your uploads and downloads on telecom's website. Just registrate, login and it will tell you your detailed usage/day. www.telecom.co.nz

location: North Dunedin, 2kms from exchange, single computer online this is no mistake!!! ping jumping from 120ms to 1000ms regularly, changes by 50ms every second, changes by 2-300ms every minute while playing bf2 on xtras own servers
Here our the results for my test and I live in Beaverton,Ore
Download Speed: 658 kbps (82.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 331 kbps (41.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

my dsl router indicates that the connection speed is 20xx kbps downstream, and upstream is consistent at 320kbps.
So I don't think i am actually on the 3.5M/128 plan yet, pretty strange thou, i never heard of a plan with 320 up... go figure
I live about 5KM+ away from exchange in town, which is over the 18000k feet max loop distance according to G.dmt standard. So there is probably a range extender in between or a corkin mini DSLAM located somewhere (which explains the capped downstream, since they have 2M backhaul).
Before march last year, I was getting pretty poor download speeds
700kbps down and 100 up, 30kbps on dial up.
so telecom sent a tech down, fixed some wiring in the house
then i got 1000 up and 160down.
earlier this year, about march/april, i was getting intermittent (sp) disconnections again.
so they sent another guy, fixed up the lines again, turned out that i had some old crappy wiring and condensation.
Then i got pretty consistent 2000/320 speed.
Round about same time, I noticed telecom contractors was working on something on the street for a while (installing new local nodes?) just speculating........
I reckon it will be a long wait till rural customers can get "real broadband"......
BTW. any one that had a map of exchange and sub node (cabinet) location??
