It seems that Chorus doesn't talk to local councils about street access.

On another issue -

According to the contractors, the footpath on both sides of my driveway, and my driveway, are all to be dug up. I've had a large hole on the right side since January, with no walking access in that direction. The latest letter says work is expected to be completed 20th April.

A contractor told me a cabinet or box of some kind is going outside my home. I haven't been able to get any further details except for the information that their plans are cast in stone and won't be changed. My plans include a change to my vehicle crossing, which is supported by city council. If this cabinet or whatever goes in where the contractor indicated its going to be right in the middle of my driveway. Apparently it can then be moved at my expense.

I've called Chorus and been told I should get a call back this Wednesday. They suggested that if I don't hear back from them I should call again Friday (yeah, right, on Good Friday).

What boxes/cabinets are being installed locally? Anyone know?

I just read your blog-post, that's a pretty awful situation and attitude (from the contractors, not from you

). I guess the public, and Chorus, are very much at the mercy of the local subcontractors, and the comment from the Chorus comms-manager is encouraging.

My suburb (well, I don't actually own all of it, only a very small part) is being dug up at the moment and by all accounts they seem to be doing a reasonable job of keeping inconvenience to a minimum (although my wife did have a bit of a 'who goes first' moment where it was down to a single lane, but she drives a green car so she just went). It all looks rather messy with holes, cable drums, temporary barriers, cones, trucks, diggers all over the place but where they have finished they leave things reasonably tidy. We do have the luxury of generally wide roads and mostly off-street parking.

The price we have to pay for progress I guess.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Hmmmmm..... Embarassment is not a good look for a government or a private company. The attitude, while typical of what I've seen privately from councils and other civil contractors, is still pretty rubbish. I wonder what would happen to your property if you actually getting connected to fibre....???

Without reading into it, You would have to check the local bylaws if you think it is breaching your boundry and a nuisance. Think it comes down to where your property boundry lies. (White markers at either side marking the end of your fenceline generally).

Traditionally footpath/front verges are council owned and labelled as public use.. IE footpaths can be used by anyone. There are usually 3-8m exclusion zones from the kerbside that remains council property. And as such they can do with as they wish. Chop it up, lay new cable etc etc. The most they tend to have to do is notify you of possible disruptions to access.

Which is why if you park a non warranted car on your front lawn outside the fence.. they can tow it away :)

The police however, see cars parked over driveways a civil issue. And can choose to tow it at Registered Owners expense if it is unsafe, or will advise the owner to contact the council to send a parking enforcement officer to come ticket it/tow it.

Just trying to get my head around this...
So they have dug a hole next to your driveway. And either a cabinet or chamber is going their. Have you made an application with the council around the same time the digging was going on to widen your drive way or something? I find it very hard to believe the designers would plonk a cabinet in the middle of someones driveway, unless of course there has been ZERO communication to the council and have not seen your application to make your drive bigger.

Here in Palmy they have done a fair chunk of trenching but in one street they have chosen to replace existing DP's (grey pods) with the new bigger DP they are using for fibre, so that the copper co-exists in the same DP that the fibre will. Yet in another street they have stuck the new fibre DP's next to the old copper DP's. Then in places that have BDD pits they just stick the new fibre DP on the edge of the boundaries even though the duct to the house could be in the middle of the section. I think it is just a make it up as you go along type arrangement.

Check out s142 and s146 Telecommunications Act 2001. I think s142(2)(c) covers the situtation. Probably best to get your accessway into your property constructed now to avoid any doubt and make sure Chorus know that they will be obstructing traffic if they proceed with their cabinet location.

A tip for everyone else: I know a business that has made the entire length of their property an accessway in order to prevent a telco from plonking their stuff outside. It appears to have worked so far.

Hi, no that Fibre Access Cabinet will contain several splitters and probably serve near on 200 properties, I am not exactly sure of the exact capacity but its around there. As its all passive and just fibre connectors, and splitters there is not much to house.

To be fair, this is the first year of rollout, they could be trialling different approaches, and will settle on one approach for most of the country

I hope this business is the last in the country to be able to be connected to the UFB

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...
