We just had the cable put in under our road and a pamplet was put in our letterbox how it was now available with Orcon.

I just a chat with someone else who lives around my area. His concern was that unable to get two different phone number is an issue for them and not being able to use many handsets around the house.  Eg., family homes, multiple bedrooms etc ... post teen kids ...

Our concern was similar.  B/c we both don't do much downloading we might be passing on this for the being .......

Your thoughts?

since it is all voip no reaosn why you can't have dozens of phone numbers if you really want to - the limitaiton is only what your choice of ISP is willing to provide

you can still use multiple handsets AFAIK on UFB
The genius setup might be different, not sure.

I was on the knowledge that the Genius machine only has one telephone jack.  So all the normal telephones are redundant unless one just get a cordless system and have 4 handsets for example or go with VOIP be it wireless or RJ45.

I think that both of us like to have a normal corded phone in the kitchen and another maybe in the lounge and garage, maybe in the bedrooms and a cordless system for out and about ...

You are not limited to THEIR VoIP service. You can have other services, with their own ATA devices, etc.

Why would you think it's limited, and a limitation of UFB?

So it's possible to have multiple handsets around the house then? If it's Rj45 it might mean rewiring the house or go wireless. What sort of solutions are there?

You can rewire the phone output from the VoIP box into the internal wiring (if you know what you are doing). I do this for many of my VoIP / Naked broadband installs.

Yep, exactly what I did at home with naked DSL - disconnected the internal wiring from the POTS line and rewired it to a Linksys ATA. Works like a charm although obviously you are limited by the number of extensions your ATA can power.

Nothing you've mentioned is a limitation of UFB.

If you want to use multiple handsets around the home simply integrate the Genius into your existing home wiring.

Its a worry that the UFB is hardly out of the blocks and lots of bad information. As others have said, the new world of VOIP opens many more voice options (along with others) that previous technologies did not allow

You could have 1000 phone numbers (literally) and run an entire call centre (literally) out of your house with a UFB connection. I think orcon provide multiple numbers but if not just go with another VOIP provider to provide your other lines like 2talk or world exchange whom both have been providing this service for years.

In terms of wiring it can be wired from the Genius or ATA to your existing home wiring and someone like Coffeebaron could do this for you. However it could be worth doing a structured cabling install as this will future proof your house and make things heaps easier. Also wireless isn't faster than ultra fast broadband so even if you pay for a 100mbps connection, unless you have cables to your various computers you won't get the full speed.

Thanks, maybe I need 3rd party products then ..

Orcon technical support said that only one no. is provided for time being for residential products and that the Genius machine has only one jack so I need a cordless ph system with multiple handsets with 4 or 6 handsets that he said ..

Or you hook that one jack into your existing wiring, which is what lots of people do now with Genius.

And how many extensions would you expect your ATA to power? or is it a trial and error thing? for example, could it power two traditional corded phones and a cordless powered phone?

Yes should be able to power that. Apparently there is some kind of rating that has been discussed on here previously so Google it.

To the OP I suggest you just get the internet with Orcon and get a dual port ATA withWorld Exchange for 2x phone lines.

Thanks again :)

I have been looking on the World Exchange website.  Does it give general info to the customer like prices and installation notes that I can have a look at?  Would you have a link.

It someone else in our suburb who asked about a 2nd line.  We don't need two lines ourselves, may look into the rewiring thingy though.  Generally how much would that cost to do and is there a wiring cost to get fiber?  I know ISPs tend to skip the connection fee.

We are looking at supporting 4 corded phones and a cordless phone (with two handsets).

Oh, just one thing.  Orcon says with fiber - telephone calling does not use any data off our account.  If they went with iTalk for eg ... that would use data right?
