Have just moved to Telecom after couple of years elsewhere. My former ISP is offering nothing like the value of newly doubled data plans, as I have my landline with Telecom too.

So what do geekzoners do with their data? I now have 70 or 80 GB per month more data to use, and I want to use as much of it as possible :).

Torrents are obviously popular, but fair enough, not to be discussed here.

I am not opposed to paying to join a service now that I am saving some $, but what services are legitimately available to me with crazy geo restrictions? Local equivilents of Hulu or Netflix? Or one of these, with a proxy? I don't have a US credit card.

Suggestions?

I have actually gone over 100GB but 80% of that is the wife going nuts watching TV catching up on shows shes missed over the past 2 years :)

step 1:
sign up to www.unblock-us.com (free trial, no credit card required for trial period, $5US/month after that)
very easy to set up.

Step 2:
Enjoy previously restricted sites on your Pc, and apps on your conected TV or Ps3/Xbox360 such as Netflix ($8US/month), Crackle (free, movies but with ads) Hulu (free) Hulu Plus (~$8/month) 4oD (free, heaps of channel 4 back catalogue), bbc iplayer etc etc

for reference, 1 HD movie on Netflix uses around 3GB (depending on length of course) so you have plenty of stuff to try out.

Start serving a website from home; blog, WHS remote access, etc.

Also an excellent suggestion, thanks. Could start backing up tthe the critically important family photos to the cloud.
I have an free iCloud account, probably the best option. Otherwise perhaps Google drive, but i understand no ability to use with iPad, which is my primary computer.

Do we know if iPlayer or a similar service have the F1 and Olympics?
I don't have SKY, no plans to get it, would be great to watch F1 live, and have more options for Olympics than the presumably highlights only that will make it to FTA TV.

not really. iPlayer MIGHT have it if the BBC bought rights to that stuff, but they are typically bought by BSkyB which means you need a uk Sky subscription to access theirstreaming services (just like iSky over here)

ETA: that will teach me to make statements without googling first. looks like iPlayer will have quite a bit of Olympic stuff

Heh, I think the porn industry, the participants in particular, must be resiting the shift to HD, for the most part.
There are some things I don't need to see in high def!

There's really only one thing to get with all that extra data: HD media. All my TV shows and anime I download are 720p. And IF I download a movie (yes, I know it's bad - I've cut down a lot though) it's in 1080p.

Have the sweetest setup now. Automated downloads via SABnzbd+. Just input all the shows I watch, and it downloads them, when the appear online, in 720p, unpacks them and renames them into their own folders. Ready for me to watch when I get home. Even sends me a notification when files are ready.

You should give it a go. Quite a complicated setup, but once done, you won't regret it!

Ok so unblock-us was easy, just sign up for trial, 1 week, then change DNS settings.
Watching new Simpsons on Hulu as I write. VERY COOL. (480p, no buffering issues)
