Just received word should be getting UFB fibre installed on the 30th!
This in Avondale, Auckland.

Sure. And then you have to find an ISP that will actually connect that service? And find a VoIP phone service?

Did they actually explain what you need to do to get the service?

The install date has been given to me from my ISP (Orcon).
I've been in long discussions with Orcon leading up to this.
This is for a business service and at this stage not interested in using the VoIP service (integrating with PBX is way down on the priority list at the moment).

So it's not a consumer thing yet? And seeing you are not using VoIP you are going to keep the old copper around then?

Keeping the copper as the PBX is analogue lines (yes i know horrible).

Am currently using Orcon dsl on one of the copper lines and after seeing how fibre goes will get rid of the dsl.

The big advantage of UFB fibre for us is we can get more than 1 IP address without having to move to expensive connections like HSNS, other expensive fibre, etc.

Horrible having analogue lines with a PBX. Its asking for trouble. Telecom has recommended digital lines for PBXs for a very long time with good reason. I didn't install the PBX.
The trouble comes about from the lack of signalling, the PBX has to listen to the line to see when it gets hung up rather than being told which can occasionally cause problems when it gets it wrong.

Anyway, the point of my OP was to let people know UFB is starting to "go live" as i haven't seen any other public indications on here that people are being connected up.

Chorus installed a roadside fibre cabinet in Jan.

ahh so cleardown on reversal not always working, yes, but you could have pushed a ISDN BRI to them and fix that on those old analog lines, assuming it was available.

Anyway, all history for you now :)

Will be migrating from analogue to voip eventually but the real reason for UFB was internet :) Voice can wait.

Your PBX should support polarity reversal. When the outside party terminates the call, the polarity of the line (the + and -) are reversed.

Motel pbx's especially use this to determine when the call is connected so they can start the timer for billing.

A properly configured Linksys ATA can convert a voip line to analog for a standard PBX and they support polarity reversal.
I have a number of motels now using them.

If you call 0800-000-000 from a standard landline, you should hear some clicking. One of those clicks is the polarity reversing as the IVM answering system at the other end answers the incoming call

It's the solution but many people don't realise it's not enabled by default on Telecom NEAX lines or TelstraClear voice lines on their Nortel switches.

I didnt realise that. Of course i have just been converting motel and hotel systems from analog so never ordered an analog line with it.

Also on Telecom lines "Clear forward / Answer reversal" are two items so you need to get both set on..

You do realize you can get as many IPs as you want via normal DSL? We have a /28 at one location and /29 at another.... Depends on your ISP.
