Hi all

Currently it appears that only Orcon offer UFB services to Wellington and if you use their availability tool and enter an address where fibre has been laid e.g. Kelson (one of the original trial areas), you get the message:

"Fibre has been laid in your area, but we can’t connect you until we undertake some technical work."

Does anyone know or have any idea what this technical work is? Is it the royal "we" i.e. Chorus, or does an ISP need to install equipment in each exchange?

Is this USB1, USB2 or the new USB3

Anyway, as I understand it the trial systems (of which there are a handful around the country) dont have the backend systems to support the UFB, ie they only had a stripped down infrastructure/backend for the trial as at that time the UFB design spec had not been established.

These trial areas dont need changes (or significant changes) to the gear in the street but just the gear that feeds it, and Chorus have indicated that will happen latter this year.

It's not just Kelson (the wgtn trial area) that shows this message. Churton Park and Camborne (that have just been completed) show this message too.

As said there are are number around the country, same applies to all. Churton Park is a new UFB build, but maybe while the fibre has been laid the OLT's and backend has not been provisioned as yet.

Yeah it would be a serious project setting up the backend too, and OLT cards aren't the sort of things you just pickup from a shop the day after you finish installing the chassis so it all has to be planned in advance to match expected takeup by customers.

Time to find a new industry!
