Is Maxnet going down the path of putting all their high users in a pool?

I received this email from them yesterday and I will be interested to see if speeds stay as they were....they promises they will increase so I will update here after the change today...

"With the commitment to providing you a great internet service in mind, we will be undertaking a change to your connection. You are a high performance high volume user therefore we see it fitting to move you onto a new and improved part of our network to ensure you continue to get the best experience possible.

The reason for the move is so we can seek to deliver an increase in connection speed, less variance in speed at certain times of the day as well as more stability and lower latency.

The shift is scheduled for sometime in the next few days. Your modem should automatically change over to the new network without any intervention however, if your internet does stop working please turn your modem off, wait 30 seconds and then turn it back on. If this does not work please try this again in 5 minutes.

If you cannot connect to the internet after a second attempt, please call our the Maxnet helpdesk on 0800 MAXNET.

Thank you for your understanding and patience in this matter. We understand that the Internet is important to you so, please rest assured, we are doing everything we can to deliver you the best ADSL service in the country."

No I don't think so - see AndrewShicks's post at the bottom of http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=138&topicid=102968&page_no=2
They are moving some users over to EUBA, an enhanced ADSL2+ service

Sounds just like a move from BUBA to EUBA

Ok, Thanks for that.  Do you need a specific Router for Euba or need to change settings?  I had no connection this morning even after a router reboot?

You need a router that supports VLAN10 on the WAN interface if you want to use native PPPoE or DHCP otherwise nothing changes if you're using PPPoA.

Hi everyone

This change is just getting our highest users onto the EUBA network. No changes will be required on your modems at all. We have had *some* instances where modems haven't come back online within a short period, and a phone call to our help desk has been required (0800 MAXNET).

We aren't doing anything more to shape these users or make anything slower or more contended ... on the contrary, we expect your experience to be better because of this move.

Our research in the past couple of weeks has shown a heightened level of latency/dropped packets and contention throughout the entire BUBA network, not just our handover. To that end, we are doing everything we can to reduce our high users from experiencing these issues.

Please let me know if you have any other questions ...

I have a cisco SRP527W? Is there any advantage to using PPPoE instead of PPPoA?

Is there any reason not to be on EUBA? I'm probably not in your highest users category but do use VoIP so lower latency always sounds good

Once we've done these initial 'rounds of movements, we'll potentially open up for users to request what network they are on. In some cases, EUBA is not available in users area, hence the requirement for us to maintain the two separate networks.

Hi Burtz - what sort of data usage do you have? intrigued :)

<- don't ask me where I am - I haven't a clue: its a tech thing ;)
Housewife computerer: not particularly great at either.
And don't take me too seriously.

The calculation was done based on average usage of day time traffic between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Generally those who were moved were consistently using more than an average of 1-2Mbit/sec ... up to the highest users using 9-10Mbit average during this time frame.

so I guess this raises the question: Why not move everybody onto EUBA wher it is available?

Good question!

Its all about dimensioning ... The more users you have on the dimensioned part of the network, the more bandwidth Chorus will allocate to you. That was all well and good when data caps were low, and "using the internet" meant
step one: download a webpage
step two,a: read said webpage
step two,b: someone else downloads a webpage

Now we have streaming media, much higher and more constant use of the internet and much larger datacaps. So its a good thing that EUBA came along to solve all the problems, EXECPT for 20% of the country that can't get EUBA.

If we moved everyone who could get EUBA to EUBA, those left on BUBA would fight each other to get the tiny amounts of bandwidth available to them, and 20% of our customer base would get a terrible internet experience.

The BUBA network at large is fine, apart from this dimensioning issue. If we can get smart about user management and where we put the low users and heavy users, we can keep delivering a great service to all our customers.

In the past we've been known for delivering great speed and low latency, we done this through owning a Data Centre, having lots of bandwidth for other reasons along with the fact that dimensioning with low caps wasn't a problem. With this combo, we've traditionally been faster than almost all other ISP's in the country.

Now we just need to get smarter about things ... and this is step 1 to making sure we stay awesome.
