Hey all, I just joined in the hope I can find someone on here with some experience and who can help my problem.

I have a D-Link 302g RevisionC Router/Modem, and am on a 3.5mb plan with Ihug. But when I try to download torrents with Utorrent, it goes incredibly slow. Like 1 - 3kb/s. There is also a icon telling me there is no incoming connections. I port-forwarded the port I wanted to use (twice!) to no avail. It says on the Rule Stats that it is working but theres still no incoming connections on Utorrent. It's the same with Bitcomet as well. Limewire doesn't download very fast (15 - 30kb/s) but my online games, normal HTTP downloads, and webpages are still at top speed (I download files from webpages at around 350kb/s). I've tried turning off all my firewalls and anything that could be a problem (Spybot Search & Destroy, Windows Firewall, AVG 7.5) but nothing at all is helping. I've got no idea whats happening, and am at the end of my tether. Please, somebody help me!

(PS. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I wasn't sure which one to put it in.)

Check the last FAQ in this page, may have something to do with it.

It was informative, but would it really slow down that much to 1kb/s when I can download stilla t 350kb/s?

Just doesn't really make sense. Thanks anyways!

I heard that someone just encrypted his information from p2p, so Ihug couldn't differentiate it from other data. Any ideas how to do this?

The easy way for them to slow it down is to look at what port you are using, then just stop it all together. Sounds like what is happening. I understand that some p2p loaders will operate in a HTTP port 80 session, this is not easily trapped.

After a very long and lengthy heated debate with a senior manager at ihug today (been dealing with them for weeks now about slow speeds) I can confirm that every port above 1000 and every protocol other than http and email is shaped.

Not only that the routing they use for international traffic (AsiaNet is lagged out of contention even as a good dial up bandwidth provider.

This is the some of content of an email received by me from this manager.

As per log on your account advised customer of shaping and new policy. Data loss is at asianet. Line speed is at max with good line. Will change account for him to test the new speeds with the understanding that he can revert back to his old account in a couple of days if it doesn't improve. I have advised customer that we will waive disconnection fee as per the policy on change of terms & conditions regards

The line speed he talks about in this is downloading from their server. It has failed to max out 3mbits even though now I am on 7.6mbit.

Of an evening I cannot even run a simple piece of software that communicates with a server in the UK without it lagging out causing the software to freeze.

I accept that there are problems with the backend but common, for ihug to blatantly shape EVERY bit of traffic through their network that isn't http or email is daylight robbery. To think I paid $70 for a service that was less than dial up.

He argued that the as my line was provisioned for 3.5 mbit it met the contractural obligations of theirs and they could shape it as much as they liked and on whatever port or protocol they liked.  One mere mortal of a customer services rep there told me that customers were leaving in droves because of the problems.

Vodaphone have upped the ante there and want them to source another provider other than Asia Net

So anyway, after that I have formally complained to the Commerce Commission and I have today joined up with TelstraClear who have assured me that any shaping that takes place will not reduce the connection to any less than 70% of the bandwidth I have signed up for.

My answer to you is like so many are doing with ihug.....leaving!

I wish I could sometimes, but I haven't got the money for the disconnection fee. Altough it should be done in a few months, who would you recommend I go with?

Oh, and by the way, I don't think that is the final problem. I can check with Utorrent if the port is open, and even though my port-forwarding says it's working, Utorrent says it is still closed. I've tried using port 80 (I don't know if thats bad or not, I'm new to this) and still nothing!

I'm so frustrated! ARGH!

There is no need for you to pay anything.

In moving to Telstra they provide me with a free modem, not that I need it but I'll take it. 2 months free traffic (10gig per month), no connection fee, as I am already connected with another provider and due to iHug changing their terms and conditions the senior Manager informed me via email that disconnection fees will be waived if people want to leave due to their shaping policies they have now put in place.

I think you will find that legally they would find it difficult to charge a fee when they have changed the terms of service from the contract that you entered into with them.

As for your utorrent telling you the port isn't connected could very well be a firewall issue. One way you could test what connections are active on your computer is to run your torrent program as normal and start transferring data. In a dos window (Start>Run>Type Cmd and hit enter) Type at the dos prompt netstat -na The results will show what connections and what ports are open and running. This may shed some light on your problem.

Trust me, the shaping taking place at iHug is so bad that when running my FTP program I can have periods of 10-15 seconds where no traffic occurs at all. This is despite the fact that I can download the same file via http with no problems and a lot faster..

On a good note, despite the fact that I am leaving, one of the main concerns for me was the shaping that caused my forex trading software to crash, it lagged so badly the javascript couldn't handle it. Last night was the first night in weeks it didn't go down and worked as it should. Maybe my heated discussion with the Senior Manager made a few things happen on my static IP account despite his stating that in order for my account to chnage the whole of iHug has to change. It makes me wonder some times just who they think they are dealing with, idiots perhaps?
