Hi, I'm in the Albany area and want to get UFB. I decided to go with Orcon but have been told that with their Genius voip modem I can't use my existing phone jackpoints. I have four in my house and really need all of them working. Is there a simple way to hook the jackpoints up to the Genius Modem? Is this just an anomaly with the Orcon system?
Worldnet tell me they can provide me with UFB and I will be able to use all jackpoints.
My options appear to be go with Orcon and get a set of cordless phones or go with Worldnet.

No matter what provider you go with to use existing jackpoints you will need to get somebody to wire them into the ONT or the RGW that provides the voice services. This will work with any ISP, but won't necessarily be part of a standard install.

Thanks for your reply. As you can tell I am a bit ignorant in these matters, but can that be as simple as linking an existing jackpoint to the modem once the internal jackpoints are isolated from the house's external wiring, or is it more complex than that?

In principle yes - specifically, the master socket where the telecom line came in from the street, as it's highly likely all the other jackpoints slave off that one.

You need to watch out for the support Ringer Equivalence Number (REN) of the device. I don't recall what the requested standard has been, or what your device will support (no doubt biddlecorp will), but as analogue phones tend to take electricity from the phone line, the IAD needs to have enough punch to enable the phones to ring. Most devices are 0.5REN (Telecom's design was supposed to support 4REN at home... mine doesn't though), but some will consume a lot.... I have a classic phone that pulls 2.5REN....

Yes it can be done, get the tech to install the hybrid fibre/copper cable to the ONT so it can be connected to the internal wiring that exists. Drop me a PM if you need some assistance as I'm in albany.

So, to clarify, the only point of the hybrid connection is to give a ready made link to the internal ph cabling network for ease of linking it to the ONT or RGW?

Not much use to me, though, as my fibre feed will come from a different berm connection 'grey pipe' (what are those things called?!) than my POTS line. Not a biggie, though, as my phone cabling is readily available from under the house.

Another qestion - is it an option to keep the old POTS setup if connected to UFB or is it mandatory that the telephone service be provided over the UFB fibre? (Not asking because I want to do that but just for info).

Thanks in anticipation. I greatly appreciate these threads for the information so freely given.

You can keep the existing POTS service this isnt an issue. I have vdsl (for testing) and UFB at home :)

Typically copper will not be removed, however there are no guarantees that this will be the case, or that it won't happen in the future,

In Australia copper will be decommissioned 18 months after fibre is deployed, no such thing is happening here. There may be cases however were due to local body restictions or pole loading that this may need to occur with some overhead runs.

Just a related question. While NZ is moving towards UFB. If the new owners don't use the Internet can they still just pay $40-45/mo just for a phone? Is that still available? Rather than getting fiber just for the phone.

Unlike countries such as Australia where copper is removed 18 months after fibre is deployed there are no such plans here.
