Would some kind soul consider posting a step by step instruction guide for installing one of these, so we can make it a sticky! It seems like it would help a number of people.

Perhaps using one of these kits as a sample.

I'll pay to buy one and send it to someone who will create the guide.

To qualify you must be able to do this to a professional level and be ok with making a reasonable quality guide.

I've installed a few myself, but I could hardly call them professional installs, even though they probably do the job just fine.

A superb idea, though!

I think your idea is a good one.. But..

The problem with phone wiring is that every setup is unique. I still encounter wiring that literally defies belief, and takes a long time to reverse engineer. In the perfect world wiring a master splitter can be easy. It can also be a nightmare.

Every home should have one fitted, but encouraging people to attempt a self install will ultimately end up with people who don't have the skills attempting it, and possibly creating an even bigger mess in the process.

That particular one I charged more as there was a faulty cable pair. Most are 1-2 hours jobs, even the odd 1/2 job, still got to travel there, pack down / pack up + plus cost of parts - so yes, same price usually.

sbiddle: takes a long time to reverse engineer.

A lot of the time can be spent just working out what's going on in the original install. Ultimately you want a new lead off direct to your modem and this can mean physically laying a new cable, with all the cable pulling issues surrounding that. (In some cases you can use spare cores of an existing cable, but that depends on the cable type and how it's all subsequently wired from there onwards etc.)

Basically someone can do a write up on the basics, the concepts, pictures showing what you'd expect to see, where and what the ETP boxes look like, where they are if there's no outside box, what joiner gel clips to use, how to use them, what to do when you have an alarm that dials out, what cable to run from the splitter to the modem, now to work safely so you don't short anything out etc etc... BUT you do need to assess every install individually rather than apply absolutely the same approach each time.

Should also put a bit in about how to install and wire the new RJ45 wall outlet and how to make (or the need to buy) a new modem lead as the modems RJ11 to older phone style BT plug cable wont fit in the new JR45 wall outlet etc.

I agree. I think I was imagining the guide would cover a basic straight forward install. I would still put a recommendation on the guide to suggest it's done by a professional, with the relevant disclaimers about liability etc. I guess the person who did the guide could potentially put his/her name at the bottom in reference to contacting them if issues were experienced or if they wanted professional assistance.
