New Zealand’s biggest website Trade Me has teamed up with top New Zealand ISP, Orcon Internet, to help more New Zealander’s experience the internet at high speed.

“Orcon and Trade Me share similar values, have similar backgrounds and are both kiwi business success stories, so we jumped at the chance to partner with Trade Me to help bring more New Zealanders on to broadband,” said Scott Bartlett, General Manager at Orcon.

Visitors to Trade Me can click through from the Orcon presence in the ‘Computer’ section of Trade Me, to a dedicated Orcon/Trade Me micro-site to find out more about these special offers.  This site is located at www.trademe.orcon.net.nz

Orcon was successfully selected as Trade Me’s ISP partner after being assessed against various criteria including coverage, customer support and attitude..

“Orcon have a similar start-up mentality to Trade Me, and a reputation for delivering great service and products to their customers,” said Trade Me general manager, Sam Morgan.

“Orcon also scored top ISP in the survey Trade Me ran last year which shows that they are an ISP that our community feels good about.”

Interesting - Orcon is the official 'powered by Telecom' ISP partner for TradeMe?

I would have thought TradeMe and Telecom would have more in common...

We all know that except for a few ISPs in this country, they are all "powered by Telecom".

Obviously Telecom New Zealand wasn't smart enough to work with Trademe. Either because they didn't see the benefits of exposure to this multitude of users, or because they simply disregarded the deal as nothing to worry about. Either way, even if they tried, obviously they didn't try hard enough.

And if they didn't try hard enough is because they deemed the business unworthy of Telecom. In this case, why make such a fuss about it now that's done with another company?

Believe me, I've seen some huge companies firing in their own foot with this type of attitude... Think IBM and Microsoft, newspapers and blogs (hey, newspapers just signed a deal with Yahoo!) and others...

People really need to read the Cluetrain Manifesto, open up and think outside their small boxes.

Interesting comment... Telecom worked with TradeMe for the text alert service. Some one was smart then, weren't they?

Yes, they were smart then, but not now. It just shows that at some stage Telecom thought the idea of partnering as an "official  ISP" wasn't feasible, or wouldn't provide a good return, or any other reason.

In this case Telecom decided not to participate on this - either because they didn't want to, or Orcon's proposal was better.

Or it could even be that Telecom wasn't aware of this happening.

Mmm I don’t think so, as Ferrit is targeted towards Retailers and Trade Me predominately individuals.

Does anyone else think this is a peering agreement?

If you look at http://www.ispmap.co.nz/topmap.html you will see that for orcon to get data to the trademe website, it has to travel out of the country and then back in again via UUnet USA and then through TelstraClear or back in via AT&T which I would say costs them a fair bit.

If they peered with orcon then trademe would be paying less of a bandwidth bill to AT&T and orcon would be paying less to UUnet USA so the costs for both companies would be less and the data to travel between orcon customers and trademe would be almost free for both companies.

Also its in line with Trademe's goal of supplying pages to its user at super high speeds and orcon's goal of cutting costs and at the same time, removing the wasted international bandwidth.

I dont know if this does involve peering or not (they may just label it prefered isp) and if it did I wouldnt know if this has anything to do with the WIX or Auckland internet exchange. Also note that AIX.net.nz is a domain owned by orcon. Just found that out while I was typing this trying to think of the proper name for the auckland internet exchange. lol.

The other side of it could be that it is advertising for Orcon - users that sign up get $10 credited to their trademe account. I dont know what the business benefits for trademe would be other than giving away or getting orcon to pay for $10 worth of sellers fees.

AFAIK Trademe has more than one provider - not only AT&T.

Right you are - sorry I was trying to keep the post simple to understand. I start to confuse myself (and possibly the reader) if i start throwing all sorts of names into the puzzle.
Also the peering idea is just a theory that could possibly become a real interconnection.

Looks awfully like some sort of peering.
I don't think a packet can go to the USA and back in 49ms.

WIX is Wellington Internet eXchange. Check out http://www.wix.net.nz  for more details. It's a MAN (metropolitan Area Network, one of if not the first in the world, started by Citylink.)

Wellington is a very forward thinking city, Auckland is stuck in the 90's with broadband, but have pretty skylines. (lets see who knows WTF I'm talking about hehe)

Does anyone know how long they have been peering through the WIX?
I thought most of the ISP's pulled out of the WIX and left only the regional ones and local businesses. I am probably wrong on this though.  I would find it interesting if trademe is the only reason they are connected to the WIX, if that is the case because I dont think there is too much other major traffic that goes through there other than a few small hosting companies.

Does anyone know if any other major bandwidth consuming / popular sites are peered on the WIX that would make it worth Orcon being a peer?

Wasn't it only TelstraClear that pulled out of the peering agreement?

It seems a crazy decision to insist that traffic from other ISPs to/from TelstraClear customers has to go from NZ to the USA gateway and back again...

Telstra Clear and Telecom pulled out of peering with 2nd tier players, most of which peer at APE or WIX given the chance.

ispmap only lists internatiuonal peers.. not national peers/transit. I think thats what confused you in the 1st place.

Thanks
