Please note that I tested Orcon speeds at peak times (though they should not be affected). Although download speeds should not be taken at face value (I'm 10km away from the exchange) - I think that the biggest difference is in Pings (for online gaming). I will report back on the stability of the connection as I just got connected 30mins ago. Hope this helps those that are looking at changing ISPs.

WOW!!! What a difference in Ping times!

I presume you have Interleaving switched OFF with Orcon?

If so, it shows the value of doing that.  A huge improvement!

I have just switched to Orcon as well. On xtra i never got more than 4.5Mbit and best ping was around 200ms. With Orcon I average between 5.5 and 6.5mbit and ping of 40-60ms.

Having interleaving off makes a huge difference. Given those results and the much better overage charges, I wish I had made this switch a long time ago

hi there just wondering if some one could explane what is a good IP or site to ping to test my conection and what sort of times should i be looking for ?
on xtra 3.5mbps yer yer more like 500kbps if im lucky and i am only 2.5k away from exchange  yes i have seen 3.5mbps when they reboot the port and boot everyone but it soon slows up as people jump back online.
but even with slow DL times my ? lantency perhaps not sure of the name/ word for it .. but the DNS seems to be very slow just to find a damn page some days sux

any help understanding pings  would be way cool

and on a bad night

--- www.google.com ping statistics ---

10 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 70% packet loss

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 238.883/241.020/242.176/1.513 ms

yep thanks for that i have been there befor i just want to try to understand pining

yes Don't you just love UNLIMATED or MAX ?

Your line speed is approximately 295.6 Kbps or 36.2 K bytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

Important Note: Due to caching problems in Internet Explorer you might have to press and hold CTRL while clicking on reload. This should give you an accurate download speed.

Results

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

  • Download time: 27.851 seconds
  • Size of file: 1009 Kilobytes
  • Estimated line speed: 295.6 (kilobits/second)
  • Estimated line speed: 36.2 (kilobytes/second)

Well its just after midnight so people are free from the fair use policy and have their downloads scheduled to start then. I've found this to be the worst time for doing speedtests... You get better results from 6am till 2pm. After that its usually fairly good. After 12am its all downhill.

For ping see this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping

Well depends. If you are on go large then at least 500+ but on the pro plans maybe around 200, less if you are lucky. Im getting 60 because Orcon are nice and have interleaving turned off.

Badserb's post at the top of this thread shows some good-looking Ping times with Orcon.  If you can equal those, you will be doing well.  Realistically though, you will probably be stuck with similar results to Badserb's posted figures from Xtra because they don't allow interleaving to be turned off.

Why ever not?

Just because you rent your phone line from Telecom doesn't mean you need to stay with Xtra as your ISP.  Those are 2 totally separate issues.

Yeah having interleaving turned off is a bonus. You could always try switching to another ISP
