Just seen this:

The Ministry of Economic Development said yesterday it will auction off the wireless broadband spectrum, called Wimax, in early 2007.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=5&ObjectID=10412211

So what happens to the cash paid initially for the spectrum? And what about the spectrum owned by CallPlus NZWireless etc is that being auctioned aswell?

Cheers

All operators who have bought 2.3GHz management rights off other owners (specifically Woosh) have known this spectrum was up for renewal very shortly, and should have adjusted their prices accordingly.

None of the management rights have been used since tendered by the MED (MOC) in 1990 so they (MED) decided not to allow existing owners the first right of refusal, and go straight to auction, bringing it forward to next year. This means the successful purchasers will be able to using it straight away after the auction with the security they'll have it for another 20 years.

The MED may also repackage the spectrum so it better fits in with BWA technologies like WiMAX.

The other operators you mention have spectrum in different bands, not affected by this auction.

The MED have done the correct decision to carve up the band properly and auction it off.

Agreed. Most of the existing licence holders have just been sitting on the spectrum to prevent anyone else using it.
