Hi,

I'm a Telecom employee that's also a Telecom Customer.

In summary, this post is to warn you that some of the JetStream usage appearing on your JetStream usage meter, might not be your JetStream usage.

1/ During a period, where my house had no power, let alone no one in it, I was surprised to come back from holiday, and find usage appearing on the Xtra JetStream Usage Meter.

How could this be?

Considering this a security breach, I sent an email to security@xtra.co.nz

2/ Within 48 hours, I was sent back an email, apologising for the error, giving me a 1 month credit, and advised it was being investigated.

Although I know this $$ credit is TOTALLY AGAINST TELECOM POLICY, I said nothing just to get the investigation to progress.

After 7 days, no email, no phone call.

3/ Again, I sent an email to security@xtra.co.nz, quoting the Case Number they gave me, with the title contianing "Legal Action" - Xtras website says I can take legal action against the person breaching my security, after Xtra have completed their own investigation.

Again, within the next 7 days, no email reply. How can this be? Isn't this the Xtra security team?

So, I called Xtra, quoted the Case Number, to find this meant nothing to Xtra, and proceeded to explain the situation. And I did this twice more over the following 7 days, as no-one at Xtra called me, or emailed
me.

4/ Finally, on my last call to Xtra, I then was passed from Xtra through to "CTS Helpdesk". Suddenly the Case Number meant something. All this time, the emails to security@xtra.co.nz HADN'T BEEN GOING TO XTRA....

This team looked at the JetStream usage and told me that the User ID that authenticated on my JetStream connection at the wasn't mine. I asked whose User ID it was, but they said they could not tell me.

At last, progress...

5/ 4 days later, a man phoned me from a Helpdesk, and while my JetStream signal was connected, took down the ADSL signal and stood it back up again, proving my connection was my connection. He then said he would investigate further.

I've heard no more. That was 2 weeks ago.

6/ So Geekzoners, because your JetStream connection is probably used every day, you probably don't notice "micro" usage being associated to your JetStream usage meter like I did.

It's pretty sad I have to post on this forum this warning, but considering the amount of time and effort I've gone to, to sort out what is effectively a problem that's not my fault, what else can a Telecom employee do?

I also meant to say that I'm not a bitter twisted employee, I helped Telecom launch ADSL many years ago, and come from a technical background within the company that would put some people to shame ;)

Wow! What a shocking security team at Xtra... I hope this will help improve their security-awareness.

Also, whistleblower, for your bravery to bring this to public. Rest assured, the Whistle Blower Act may cover you should this comes into any legal action against you, ultimately might cost you a job but none the less it is completely legal to blow whistle about a company/person with their associated act.

It's public knowledge that at 31 March 2005 Telecom had 219,000 broadband connections, of which
169,937 were residential.

Being conservative, say .05% have my problem, that's 110 per month.......

Good write up, but I fail to see why this would be considered "whistle blowing". You'd have to bring evidence that the security team is willingly disregarding information passed to it, or that management has decided not to act on this case following an internal policy of "delay, delay until the case is dead".

Complaining of poor processes and poor customer service is not quite there yet.

Thanks Freitasm, but comments made by Chiefie about whistleblowing don't necessarily reflect my status as a whistle blower, or not.
And a Username shouldn't be considered the same, either.
Lets stay on topic of the topic.

This happened to me about 2 yrs ago when I had dialup, Paradise charged me an extra $90 for excess usage of which I didnt use. They traced the number back to a South Auckland number (Surprise Surprise) and can not tell me the number. I was forced to pay the fee :( Being a very IT Savvy person I am absolutely sure that my computer has not been hacked... and I am absolutely certain that the fault lies within Paradise.Net's servers as they have somehow found out my password.

This harks back to the confusion in the early days of Jetstart and Jetstream whether charging was by port or login.
WRT confusion, isn't Jetstream now an obsolete term?

If you think someone is physically connecting to your line when you aren't using it what do you expect Telecom to do about it? It's probably hard to get motivated and get the Police involved when a fair number of these cases are possibly "friends" or relatives of the complainant.

Interesting stuff. I'm stilling trying to figure out why and how I can connect with any user name/password with my xtra go large plan that drops like mad. By the way, even I used completely made up user name and no password, they still managed to charge all the usage to my account.

Thats because usage is charged to the line not the account

I hate XTRA

Back in the days of dial-up I had a flat rate 56k connection on a single line which ran a good 6 hours a day at least
Every time I connected the time was counted twice; as if two people connected at the same time; thus not only was I paying the flat rate fee but also per hour

This went on for 6 months before I noticed as I just used to pay my bills without really thinking about; just you know $300 here $500 there... Unfortunately it took me quiet some time to click to the fact that I was really paying $300 to $500 each month for my 56k dial up connection... Which I feel really silly for now because if I had checked it before paying all those times I could of told them to eat it

But once I clicked I contacted XTRA and after I kid you not many many many phone calls lasting no less than 1-2 hours; 9/10th of which was spent on hold they finally sent me the record of my connections for the past 8 months.
They blamed the error on my computer saying that I had a faulty modem, a virus, a hacker, someone stole my password and used it elsewhere.

The Police in fact did a little bit of investigation and had indeed confirmed that the duplicate connections must have been made from my phone line; which any normal person would assume that yes its their fault and fix it; but no they then blames me saying that I must be dialing up from a second computer within my house; which might I add is incredibly difficult to run two dial up connections off of one phone line; just in case anyone here has tried.

But I wonder; how suspicious is it that for 8 whole months every single connection I had made to XTRA was duplicated and charged for; the connection and disconnection times were IDENTICAL TO THE SECOND!
Hmm I wonder whats going on here...

Long story short I never got my money back and the (well I cant use bad words but thats the only kind of words that can describe them) easily took a few grand over the few months that this had been happening for...

EVEN BETTER; since I raised the issue with them, it never happened again
It's like the day I called them; they stopped doing it

AFAIK the hourly rate has never dropped below $2.50. 8 months x 30 days x 6hrs x$2.50 = $3600. You must be paid far too much to have let that go so long but why let it drop so easily?

We never got a full refund I don't think or that I recall

I had already wasted a lot of my time chasing them up about it that I just plain gave up

Its like when one day you realize that you hate the job you have; and each day you cant wait to leave the sheeethole place for somewhere better that you really just dont care what happens there anymore
