So just looking at the iHug Broadband 3 fair use - http://www.ihug.co.nz/products/broadband/bband3_detail.html  it really is just a 15GB plan. If you use over 500MB/day for 3 days straight then you get throttled to 64k. They are basically getting away with renaming the product without changing anything. In fact it is worse than the 15GB plan - Just think about downloading the latest Xcode Tools, a linux distro and all the patches for OSX over 3 days. You would be cut down to 64k even if you downloaded nothing for the rest of the month. At least on the old plan you would only be cut down after the whole 15GB was used.

IPTV, VOIP, etc. will never take off until we get these limitations changed. It is like having the bandwidth of a firehose and a bucket the size of a thimble.

That's really pathetic, I agree with you.

You have come up with a good analogy here...

I just had a look at iHUG's plans and there is nothing between the $50 "Fair Use" (or UNFAIR USE plan if you ask me Yell) and the $80 / 20GB plan.

Seems like a big gap in their offering to my way of thinking...

Why don't you have a look at XNET's offering:

http://www.xnet.co.nz/internet/broadband.shtml

For $62 per month you could have 15GB at Full Speed down/128kbps up.

And no UNFAIR USE nonsense in sight!

Has to be a better option, don't you agree?

I suggest you go and read the FAQs - this isn't the way the fair policy works - http://www.ihug.co.nz/help/broadband/faq/quotas.html

To get cut back to 64Kb you average greater than 2GB a day over the previous three days, and you only stay restricted until the average improves rather than the rest of the month.

Right - A slight misread by me. You get throttled down to 2Mbs over 500MB (64k over 2GB). However that still means that if you needed to get 12GB down over 4 days then it is possible depending on your usage patterns that you will be throttled at some point. I guess the only thing to do is upgrade to something else with a data cap. What sucks is that other 'Fair Use' plans in other countries have don't specifically have limits or they will contact you before limiting your connection.
