New broadband 3 plan

our ihug broadband plan has just got better!

From today, we've increased the data allowance on your broadband 3 plan from 10GB to have no set data allowance (fair usage).

We've already upgraded you - so you can enjoy your larger data allowance from today!

You don't need to do anything, we've automatically upgraded your data allowance from 10GB to no set data allowance. This means you can enjoy more downloads for the same price as before. Nothing else changes, same great price and same fast speed, even the plan name stays the same!

Fair use policy on broadband 3

The fair use policy works by calculating a rolling average for your previous 3 days data usage. If your average data usage over the last 3 days exceeds certain thresholds then your download speed will be restricted until the next days calculation. See our FAQs for more information on how this works.

However for most people this plan offers the reassurance of no excess data fees and the simplicity of no data caps.

If you think one of our other plans would suit you better you can change plans anytime - just login to my account on our website and select 'change account type' from the left hand menu - it's FREE to change plans!

Or if you'd just like more info about our other plans - find out more on our website.

Cheers,
from the ihug team

How does ihug's fair use policy work on broadband 3?
The fair use policy works by calculating a rolling average for your previous 3 days data usage. If your average data usage over the last 3 days exceeds the thresholds below then your download speed will be restricted until the next days calculation. The table below shows the thresholds that apply and the speed that your plan will be restricted to:

average data usage over previous 3 days - download speed
< 500 MB - Full speed (as fast as your phone line allows)
> 500 MB - 2 Mbps
> 1 GB - 512 kbps
> 2 GB - 64 kbps

Will the speed return to normal if i get slowed down?
Yes. As soon as your average over the previous 3 days falls below the threshold limits above then your speed will increase. For example, if your average usage over 3 days is 2.5 GB then your speed will be reduced to 64kbps. If you reduce your usage over the next couple of days to an average of 600 MB then your speed will increase to 2 Mbps and if you reduce it further to below 500 MB then your download speed will return to normal.

Why does ihug have a fair use policy on broadband 3?
We wanted to provide a plan that didn't restrict customers to a set data allowance each month. However, providing unlimited data with no fair use policy is just not viable as the price we'd have to charge to make an unlimited plan profitable would make it too expensive for most people. Additionally, very heavy use of the network causes congestion for other users and reduces the performance of the network overall. The compromise was to provide a plan with no set data limit each month but instead to introduce a fair use policy that stopped very heavy users monopolising the network.

Anyone know if its limited to 500mbs/day or 500mbs/3 days

Per day.........

Haha, this is another of those creative "how to limit users best way possible" ideas from ISPs....

Not too bad, actually!  I like this policy!

Question:  By the way, I don't really get the difference between regulated UBS (rUBS), and commercial UBS (cUBS).  If I don't get it wrongly, RUBS is basically wholesaling of Telecom current broadplan plans, like Cabriolet, right?  And CUBS is basically ISPs "renting" a connection to a user?  So, plans like iHug's Broadband 3...  They are offerring this based on CUBS?

I'd much rather a system like Woosh/XTRA where there is a set daily limit during a set time.

But thats just me... I won't be using Ihugs services.

Personally I'd be annoyed at this sort of change to my policy.

One of the reasons I'm on a GB limit and not an "Unlimited" Plan.

Now if only the ISPs could actually explain thier fair play policy's in plain english Wink

Let me understand this... People who didn't want to be on an "unlimited" plan because they knew there was no need for "unlimited" since they would be well within the 10GB, and only incur a spike in download when getting a new Linux or Windows Vista .ISO are now moved to a plan they didn't want so that the ISP can shape everyone, regardless?

Not cruel. Dumb. How dumb of IHUG.

Who makes those things? Is that real what we learn from Dilbert? Is this all coming from marketing people?
