well this is my story so far when we all became max speed adsl people all was brillient my modem reported a connection speed of 3.2Mbs out of a possible 3.4Mbs max line connection speed pretty good i thought for someone who was on a miserly 256 / 128 plan befor and about 4K's away from the exchange well that was the good bit now the bad bit by the naxt day i had to reset my modem why because it couldn't connect to the net fine i thought just a few tething probs rechecked the connection speed in the router interface a ho whats this im now only connected at 2.2Mbs with a max line rate of 2.4 hmmm thinks me whats goin on here well thats been the story everyday from then on reset the modem slower speed connections ranging from as low as 1.2Mbs upto a high of 2.3Mbs so i rang orcon who said they'd take a squiz at it they did and got back to me to say we think its an interleaving problem we'll have it turned back on telecom guy rang to ask me to reset the modem i did this and wait for it w------ait for it oooooo 3.1Mbs then next day failed to connect to the net well i'll reset the modem and blow me down if its not slower (1.2Mbs) :( errrr whats goin on this aint what im paying 50 bucks a month for i then get an email from orcon with the job ticket number and what they had asked telecom to do so sent a reply back after a couple of days just to see if things got better with time (they didn't) well today i just recieved a email from the orcon techie askin me if the speeds were actual reported speeds by the router or from some speedtest site all this two weeks after i replied to his email and he asked for updated line speed and attenuations readings which i gave him

and this is what they were so if anyone here has the foggiest notion of what the mean please be my guest and tell all
here's the reading taken at 3:30am today

line rate :                  1728   down    : 160      up
Attainable line rate:    1888   down    : 960      up
Noise Margin:            19.1dB down    : 25.0dB up
Line Attenuation:        55.0dB down    : 31.5dB up
Output Power:           18.9dBm down : 2.7dBm up

Hello, welcome to Geekzone. Albeit not a solution, a bit of advice for posting here: this is going to win the Award for Longest Post On A Single Paragraph And No Puntuaction At All prize.

No joking, I stopped reading it half way through: 13 lines with no paragraphs, commas, periods... I suggest you edit the post. Make sentence of max of two lines, and add periods. It will be easier to read and people might be able to help better.

Your paying for what you can get.

What modem are you using? The noise margin seems high enough for the modem to try a higher speed. Perhaps your modem is being too conservative negoitiating the line rate.

How do you find out how fast the line can go? (Attainable line rate:)

I suspect that "Attainable line rate" is a figure plucked out of thin air by some modems. If accurate it compares your rate limited result with what you'd get if limits are off. In this case it only makes sense for the upload rates to be different.
