Hi guys,

I'm currently on a 160GB Total Home Broadband plan with Telecom, but that amount of data seems to not be enough in a household of five - all of whom use Steam and Youtube on a daily basis as well as downloading HD movies from iTunes and the like. We seem to use an average of 200GB of data a month, sometimes reaching over 300GB. I figure changing ISPs will help cut down on the pricey bills every month...I know we could simply stop using so much, but sometimes it's hard to resist and there seem to be reasonable ways to achieve it on other ISPs!

I've spent about an hour comparing prices and data usage and other information for the largest ISPs in New Zealand and have found that Snap seem to offer a very good deal - 580GB a month with no traffic shaping and unlimited, unmetered Youtube usage for $145 monthly. Maxnet's unlimited bandwidth plan sounds okay, but the waiting list and traffic shaping put me off somewhat. Slingshot also sound quite nice at $70 monthly for unlimited data, and while traffic shaping is a con, at that price it wouldn't exactly be a big deal.

So, I guess my options are between Snap and Slingshot - this might be a vague question, but what do you all reckon would be the better option here?

Snap by far. Loads of posts on here and other forums complaining about slingshot performance.

Consider FYX: http://fyx.co.nz.

$30 + $0.30c per GB.

+2 for snap.

As well as the unlimited google addon, they run a Steam Content server and data from it is zero rated (It;s currently re-populated but once done combine it with steam-limiter and almost all steam data should be zero rated)

And they have a $5 add-on where you can do AYCE for 3 consequitive nights (12-7am or something like that IIRC) if you've got some big download or something :)

For me it's also Snap! Only switched 1 month ago from Vodafone and couldn't be happier

I'm currently paying $115/month for 255Gb data+landline; if you are in S.I, all calls to 03 numbers are also included

Besides, you could have un-metered data at full speed for $5 between 1am-7am for three continuous days

I had a look; they do sound pretty good, but they have traffic shaping which is a tad offputting, and I would end up paying more on Fyx than I would on Snap for the same data usage with the 580GB plan. Plus that unmetered Steam and Youtube usage is delicious!

Well, now I just have to explain the advantages of Snap! to the parents and we should be on our merry way. Not sure why hardly anyone has even heard of Snap!

I asked around on Facebook for opinions on Snap and two friends said they've heard Snap are pretty rubbish, although judging from this thread, I'm not sure where that's coming from.

They obviously haven't used Snap if they think they are rubbish. I use them for my home connection and haven't had an issue yet. There was that outage a few weeks ago but that has been it. No ISP has a perfect track record when it comes to up time. There is also the bonus of speaking to a New Zealander if you need to ring them and I have never been on hold for more than 5 minutes.

It would all be down to marketing and their size. Smaller companies don't have the advertising dollar that the big players have. I hadn't heard of them either except for here, and I don't know anyone who currently uses them apart from people on here.

I'm voting for Slingshot. I might be a little bias considering I work for them. But I was a perfectly valid customer a year before I did on their unlimited plan and I'm still an avid fan today.

Slingshot are delivering unlimited broadband at a reasonable price even when Telecom (the guys that own the place!) told all BigTime customers (including me) it was no longer a profitable business venture.

I would rate telecoms support at the moment, as the best out of all the ISPs I have ever used.

Good to know, didn't know Snap had these little cool addons.
