And got presented with this message:

Google Inc. doesn't want you to convert this video.

Youtube denies access to services like his on a regular basis. Nothing new here.

What is new, this guy is challenging them about it.

Is his argument that is is public like TV and therefore anyone can record for their own personal use?

I did not see a clear summary.

Well you can just snatch the flv out of your cache and play it with something like GOM or convert it to whatever you like. Those sites probably make a balls of the conversion anyway.

If it's music you were trying to get, then please, for the love of God, try to obtain it on CD or in some other high quality format.

I'm not going to share my views on piracy, but I can't stand this format regression. First it was CD, then MP3, and if that wasn't bad enough now it's abysmally poor Youtube audio (often with deliberate filters applied to stop Youtube rejecting the upload) converted to MP3.

Wait til he finds out that recording public TV is illegal too unless you destroy the copy as soon as you watch it.
