Anyone have a good idea with the costs to install equipment into an unbundled exchange and also the ongoing costs? how many customers do they need to make a breakeven on voice and broadband?

no idea. tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars probably.

I think the costs are regulated and probably available from the comcom website. Also the tail prices should be there too. Prices are probably pretty high for setup but ongoing shouldn't be too bad. Main cost would probably be the backhaul.

I'm just curious to know the business case for it really...it has to be fairly large I would assume as it is only the big guys that are entering and sharing their networks.

One off costs:
Up front cost of ISAM, linecards and installation

Ongoing costs:
Co-location fees for hosting equipment in Chorus exchanges
Line rental for use of Chorus coper line from house/business to the exchange
Fee for connection from the rack to the fibre providers who connect to (or near) that exchange
Cost of backhaul over fibre providers network to ISP's data center / NOC
Maintenance contract with vendors of equipment

Probably more... pretty expensive but still cheaper over the long term than paying Chorus for end to end service like EUBA + Tail Extension

They also need a decent install base for it to be viable to market it on any sort of scale. If only a couple of exchanges are done, then its not going to be very useful at all from a product launch perspective.

MSAN's are more on the cheaper side I cant say an exact about but for a fully kitted out MSAN would be between 30,000 and 45,000 MSANS are better for Unbundled providers as you can put both VoIP and ADSL2+ or VDSL2+ cards in the MSAN.

A fully kitted MSAN could take 300-400 customers depending on how many POTS only customers you setup. On top of that ongoing costs are Rack rental in the Access Seeker rooms in the exchanges and backhaul costs, backhaul costs can range from a few hundred to a few thousand depending on the quality of service you want to offer.

Essentially to make it work you already need a good customer numbers to make this profitable.
