Hello, I've been waiting for about 1 year now for ADSL2+ to come to where I live.. and I'm still waiting with 700kb/s (max) speeds... I've included a pic of where I live but can someone just enlighten me to when they will upgrade the nearest cabinet to ADSL2+?

And I just did a speedtest and that's the result to the closest server..

I live in Dairy Flat (Auckland) but Snap is the cheapest ISP so..

You seem to have used the old SAT tool.

If you check out the Network upgrade map on the Chorus website http://www.chorus.co.nz/maps you will see that we display current urban broadband (ADSL2+) coverage, proposed UFB rollout and proposed Rural Broadband Initiative rollout.

If you enter your address you will see that you will benefit from a Rural Broadband cabinet upgrade in July 2015.

Looks like it is around 2km to where there is ADSL2+. Do you know anyone in that area? Set up a point-to-point wireless link and you will be away laughing. With that distance you will easily get enough throughput through the wireless to fully utilise the adsl connection.

All you need is two of these and good line of sight. Then I would probably just use a Draytek Vigor 120 as a modem where the adsl connection is terminated and blast that across to your house with the NanoStations then pump it in to a router at your place. Super simple and plenty of power.

Edit: Just to add.. Go Wireless also have the combo kit which comes with the two nanostations and some cable with plugs on the end. Might be what you are after if you dont have the crimping tools. Go wireless will even set up the radios for a small fee but it is really simple to do that anyway.

How much would it cost (just say me for example) for me to upgrade the cabinet where I live to adsl2+?
or would it be like 5k or something insane..

Would the ping to a normal speedtest be like 20ms to the closest server? or will it be alot higher with the PtP?

NSM5 link will add ~.5 to 1ms. ie just about nothing.

No they will just fix it lol. And yea the NanoStations add pretty much no latency.

That's a plan that would work for getting you up the list I'd think.

Might be a good idea to have a quick chat with your neighbours first to make sure they're all ok with their services being out.

Might also like to pack a bag with some over night cloths while you're at it.

Damaging a communications network is an offense, using a car in a dangerous manor is also an offense and I'm not 100% confident that your neighbours will be to pleased when their services all go out and you're trying to explain that it's because you just wanted faster Internet access, but hey, it's your call.

You did notice that you are now connected to the exchange, not a cabinet? Any cabinets your phone line goes through dont have the ADSL equipment in them until the new one is installed later. Your problem now is the distance from the exchange, not the cabinet, and ADSL is capable of over 7megs anyway so its just the fact that the new cabinet will be much closer to your place.

The 20k mentioned wouldn't include the fibre laying I would say, so I guess you can probably double that to trench 4km of fibre out to the new cabinet. Fortunately rural fibre laying is way cheaper than for city streets that are already full of cables and pipes and paved footpaths.

Time to find a new industry!

Directional drilling is now down to about $15-$30 a metre
So to run a fibre lead from the last cabinet 5km would cost about $75,000 and the cabinet itself would probably cost around $20k
